Hey Damian-

I'm still debating what to build for this one...have even thought (like you) about the S.79 (but in 1:48 scale).

How about something modern...like a Tu-22M3 Backfire bomber with AS-4 Kitchen anti-ship missiles? Am assuming this meets the criteria....

Tom, the Tu-22 would be awesome. My Campaign here is about diversity and I would love to see some modern birds and helos put forward.

We're up to 32 now, 4 months to go !!

Cheers, D

I've decided to go with a US Navy S-3 Viking. Anyone have an extra Mark 46 torpedo laying in the spares box? My kit didn't come with one.

Damn I've just done my FW190 F8/U14!
Not sure what to do for this, so far the choice will be from the following: HE177, SBD3, TBD, TBF, TBM-3, SB2C, D3A1, D3A2, B7A2, B6N2, D4Y1, D4Y2, D4Y3, G4M, Swordfish, Barracuda, Skua, F/A18 (W/Harpoon), Sea Harrier FA2 (Sea Eagle), all in 1/72 - any requests?

Regards the Stuka discussion, it was Stukas that crippled HMS Illustrious in the med in 1941. One of their large bombs hit the lift (the only unarmoured part of the flight deck) which then went off below decks causing huge damage. If I remember right, the bombs that hit the armoured flight deck did minimal damage. Also I'm pretty sure Stukas also heavily damaged HMS Formidable in the med months later. The were from a specialist anti-shipping unit - Fliegerkorps X.

thanks
Mike

Hi Mike, I've taken a look back throught the thread and I've been compiling a list to post closer to the date, and we could us either more Japanese or more modern aircraft for diversity. That's a nice stash of anti-shipping hardware you've got going, any issues with boats we should know about?

You can even build a Bf 109 E with a bomb instead of external fuel tank as they took also part in the heavy fighting as Jabos in summer 1941 to keep the Royal Navy away from Crete. Can't remember the unit, guess it was JG 77
Or what about a "Friedrich"? One of the most famous was the "Blue 1" of Hauptmann (Captain) Frank Liesendahl of 10./JG 2 in France in 1942. He claimed to have sunk 20 ships with a total of some 63.000 BRT before being killed on 17. July 1942 while attacking a tanker. So even the small "One-O-Nine" was a successfull ship hunter. Many choices we have here .....

Happy modelling!

Nah nothing against ships lol - you should see my stash of 100+ 1/700 ship kits! I like my naval aviation (a recent trip to the FAA museum was a great day out!) though and a lot of naval aviation is dedicated to sinking enemy ships. Don't forget also, that torpedo bombers doubled as level bombers for attacking land targets too.
Speaking of Japanese, I might do the B6N as I've ordered an etch set for it. A good choice if anyone has one would be B5N with the 800KG AP bomb that they used to attack the USN battleships with at Pearl Harbour.

thanks

I am a dedicated Luftwaffe nut as shown by my many answers for luft colours and such. I am thinking of building the test bird Fw 190A5/U?. Would this fall into the parameters. Do not know if it was used operationally. Did not read anything about the status of the a/c that could be included. If not a Ju 188 could fit the bill.

Hi Trevor, and thanks for joining in. The rules and regs are on the enlistment page HERE and refer to the following :
"Aircraft must be shown to have a history of dedicated and regular Anti-Shipping activity, not just occasional or opportune moments. For Strafers, unit markings must represent a dedicated anti-shipping unit."

I'm afraid this rules out prototypes and test units unless they actually led on to active models. Not being a 190 guru I'm open to being educated if you guys have further info on the A-5/U in action.

Cheers, D

Well I browsed my library and found the Hikoki book on aerial torpedo aircraft and the Fw 190 series were experimental a/c along with the Ta series and several others. One could build a Fw 200 for they did take part in several operations though not successfully and were removed from said design operation. Thus looking further I will build the matchbox He 119. Something small for I am running out of room. Need to build an aerodrome.

After attending a show yesterday, Sam has convinced me and got me enlisted into this campaign. I'll be building the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 SB2U-3 Vindicator from VMSB-241 during the Battle of Midway. I hope this fits the bill

P.S. Sorry D you may have to update your list

Trevor - yes indeed the FW190 with torpedo was experimental - I've just done a FW190F8/U14 from KG200 but not for this campaign.
The good thing is with Luftwaffe planes your spoilt for choice for anti-shipping! The HE115 was used as a torpedo bomber, also the HE III, the HE177 with Fritz X or HS293. Dornier 217E/K could carry HS293 or Fritz X (Indeed they sank the Italian battleship Roma with Fritz X bombs). JU88's were used to attack with bombs or torpedos (JU188 I think as well), they were specialist anti ship JU87 units or as you mentioned the FW200 was used to bomb convoys as well as recon.
You can't go wrong really!

thanks

You're right onto it Mike, there's plenty of options in that lot. And don't forget the minelayers and strafers, we want to sink them any way we can !

Hey D-
I did change my mind - I'm doing the Trumpeter 1/72 Tupolev Tu22M-3 'Backfire-C.' Got the kit in from Luckymodel on Friday. Holy smokes is it ever BIG and scary if you are a ship! The AS-4 'Kitchen" anti-ship cruise missiles in the kit are nearly as long as a MiG-15. Pix to come...

Damian,

Both the subjects I intend doing for this campaign are the Tamiya 48 scale kits.

The Beaufighter is an RAAF subject based on the early Mk VIc production, without the horizontal tailplanes or the hedgehog exhausts, based on this scheme.

The other is the Tamiya FB VI kit modified to this particular margue

The other idea I had was to convert the Mosquito BIV into this particular marque.

Decided against doing another of these 'Test' beds.

Love the Mossie with the Molins gun!
They have a Molins gun on display at the RAF Museums in Cosford and Hendon. Both museums well worth a visit and free to get in!

thanks
