German Secret Projects of WW2 Vol. 4

Messerschmitt P1101-101 Swing Wing Bomber
Please note the P1101 bomber designs are not to be confused with the P1101 fighter projects. Messerschmitt produced a series of some 10 designs in all for an advanced attack bomber.

The P1101/101 here proposed an original design and configuration. It featured 2 pairs of jet engines arranged at nose and tail of the fuselage and a variable geometry wing, capable of being swept up to 60 degrees during flight. In retrospect the design may have experienced problems with the rear engines ingesting down wash from the wings and exhaust gases from the forward pair.

Messerschmitt P1101-103 Swing Wing Bomber
Another design in Messerschmitt’s series that proposed a variable geometry wing was the P1101/103. Very little data remains, only the general arrangement drawings seem to have survived.

The design again used 4 jet engines arranged in pairs and mounted quite far back under the wings and close to the fuselage sides.

(I hope to include the P1101-102 and P1101-105 in a future set).

Messerschmitt P1110 Ente
The P1110 Ente (‘duck’) was one of many designs in the P1110 series, but this one was the most unusual variant featuring a canard wing arrangement. The forward canard was mounted low on the fuselage sides with the main wing aft and mounted high at the shoulder to accommodate the air intake scoops beneath to feed the HeS 011 turbojet similar to the Me P1110/ll. The cockpit was in the extreme forward fuselage flanked by four MK108 30mm cannon.

Messerschmitt ceased further work on the Ente to concentrate on the more conventional variants.

A number of Messerschmitt designs at the time, the P1110 Ente, P1111, and P1112 seem to have a common look or similarity.

That’s it for this volume, more coming.

Hi Peter, Fantastic work as always. By the way, how many time do you spend on such a collection of profiles? It must take ages... Thanks Rowan for the editing work. Knowing how difficult it is to work with the gallery at the moment, I can imagine a lot of modelling time went into this feature. Jean-Luc

Phew...how long do I spend on these? Approximately about 12 hours or more a week. I started this set immediately after the last WW2 British Secret Project V3 set was put up on site mid December 08, so to do the 60+ plates its taken me a little more than 3 months. It's always the first sample of each subject that takes the most time. Once one has been done it's just a matter of changing the markings and camo layers. Many thanks Peter
