Fokker D.VII

History

The Fokker D.VII was a German World War I fighter aircraft designed by Reinhold Platz of the Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. Germany produced around 3,300 D.VII aircraft in the second half of 1918. In service with the Luftstreitkräfte, the D.VII quickly proved itself to be a formidable aircraft. The Armistice ending the war specifically required Germany to surrender all D.VIIs to the Allies.

Colonel General Ernst Udet (26 April 1896 – 17 November 1941) was the second-highest scoring German flying ace of World War I. He was one of the youngest aces and was the highest scoring German ace to survive the war (at the age of 22). His 62 confirmed victories were second only to Manfred von Richthofen, his commander in the Flying Circus. Udet rose to become a squadron commander under Richthofen, and later under Hermann Göring.

The Model

Here's my Wingnut Wings 1/32 Fokker D.VIIF in the colors of Ltn. Ernst Udet. I finished it up in a week or so due to an enforced medical rest. Yes, this is relaxation for me (you should see what I have to do for a living!) It is, of course, an excellent kit which I built mostly out of the box except for EZ Line rigging. I chose to paint the nose black rather than red (as WNW suggest) since the Jasta marking was a black nose and I think it looks better this way. Just as the D.VII made an OK pilot good and a good pilot great, WNW kits do the same for modelers. (I'm in the former group, by the way.) If you've never tried WWI before, do yourself a favor and grab one of these kits. The D.VII has very little rigging. If you do build WWI and haven't tried WNW, what are you waiting for?!
