Hi guys
Quick question to the experts please. I got hold on some White ensign RLM81 & 83 to spray my Komet with.
Now I've sprayed the plane and although they have sprayed lovely the two colours are REALLY similar. Should that be the case?
I checked IPMS stockholm and although I shouldn't trust the computer screen the two colours do look different to what I've sprayed.
Also I was really careful to not mix them up
Thanks in advance
H

Hi Howard
According to K.A. Merrick's "Luftwaffe Camouflage & Markings 1933-1945" and Michael Ullmann's "Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945", RLM 81/82 was a more common finish for the topsides of the Me 163 than RLM 81/83.
Assuming RLM 81/83 is correct, the colours could be very similar - particularly if you allow for RLM 81 ranging from green through to brown as it aged. Another point to bear in mind, according to Merrick, is that German paint manufacturers used completely different ingredients (pigments) to produce paints to the same RLM standards and the colours could vary noticeably.
I've scanned samples from Merrick's book and Eagle Edition's "Luftwaffe Colour Chart" and you can see the variation, even allowing for the possible inaccuracy of a domestic scanner. Both sets of chips are produced by original suppliers of RLM paints using their original formulae:
Merrick's samples, produced by Farben Kiroff Technik, and:
Eagle Edition's, produced by Warnecke & Böhm.
I asked John Snyder of WEM last year about their Luftwaffe colours and, if I remember correctly, he told me they were matched to the Eagle Editions samples, so it's no wonder the two colours look very similar on your model.
I hope this helps - all the best
Rowan

Hi Steffen
I think we all are! Doing the scans reminded me that I've been planning a series of colour-scheme reference Features for ages!
The idea's back on the front burner.
All the best

Ah Splendid, thanks gentlemen.
I went on the info from this site: http://www.xs4all.nl/~robdebie/me163/camouflage.htm
In choosing the colours as it was a late war plane captured in Hussan.
That also explains why I was expecting to see more braun than green in the RLM81
Thanks for clearing that up for me. However now I'm un-sure as to what to do with my Komet. Add a bit of brown and re-spray or leave it looking VERY green

There was, at one time, some confusion over whether RLM82 or 83 was the darker of the 2 greens. Xtracolour has them the other way around. If you want greater contrast go with RLM82.
Heere are a couple of models painted with WEM Colourcoats.
FW 190D-9 RLM81/83
Me163 RLM81/82

Isn't it amazing how we can say so much and not answer the original question Political correctness or politicians
So to go out on a limb here and try to answer your question. If you are satisfied with the paint job, leave it as it is. If it is going to bother you, change it. After all, you only really need to satisfy yourself. Why not post some pictures?
