Taking advantage of a sunny day myself and the family took a ride out to the Derbyshire countryside today. At the last minute I decided to take my camera.
While enjoying the sights the peace was shattered by the unmistakable roar of Merlin engines.
Diving for the camera I managed to get off a quick snapshot of the BBMF Lancaster Phantom Of The Ruhr passing overhead.
I think Ive just found my new desktop for the PC!

There are times it pays to ignore the rules about Sun position. and this is one of them. What a superb desktop that will make.
Great Photo Nige.

Nice one!
I have missed two of these opportunities while in the UK.
The first time was when driving along the channel coast on the way to Tangmere. Suddenly I see the BBMF Lancaster escorted by a Spit XIX and a Hurricane in the distance. I quickly parked (very illegaly I suppose) but never got the time to get the camera out of the trunk of the car. For a long time afterwards I always had the camera in the passenger seat while driving! At least I got to hear the sound...
The second time was in Scotland a few years later. I hear a rumbling sound behind me and turn around just in time to see two Tornadoes climbing out of the next valley, wings swept back. When over the hillcrest, they turn towards us and pass more or less directly above us, very fast. Camera was securely stored deep in my backpack to be out of harms way which in this case was mostly due to Scottish showers...
My brother-in-law always carries his camera with him and he gets to take quite a few of those photos that the rest of us misses...
Well done Nigel!
Regards
Magnus

I was too far away when it appeared at Hucknall on the 23rd June.
But I did get close to a Hurricane. All for only £3!

Nice one Nige, the position of the sun really captures the Lanc.
Yet again this year I missed the Biggin Hill air show, but luckily every now and again a couple of planes flew over, with me racing out into the garden clutching my camera.

This is turning into a "photofest"
I had the Lanc pic printed out today (15"X10") and Ive framed it.Looks great! Not bad for a snapshot!
Antoni,,,seeing your Hurricane pics reminds me of the excellent book that tells the story of R4118's discovery in India and subsequent restoration.
Did you know that it was at Hucknall that Franz Von Werra,(The One That Got Away) was recaptured in the cockpit of a Hurricane after his escape from Swanick POW camp.

Yes, he got them to fetch him from Codnor Park Station but they became suspicious. While they were phoning Dyce to check his story he nipped out to the toilet and ran of to the Rolls Royce hanger. Claiming to be ferry pilot he got someone to show him the controls of a Hurricane at which point he was arrested.

Great photos Antoni!
What show was this? Its a shame I missed it as only live about 5 miles from Hucknall
Magnus, your story about the Tornadoes reminds me of my camping trips to the Lake District. manys a time Ive been woken up to the sight and sounds of a Tornado screaming over the campsite.
I certainly wouldnt want to be on the recieving end of one!

It pays to carry a camera...but the real dividends are in knowing how to use it. Great shot.
Now for th one that got away.
I was in the northern no fly zone in Iraq, sunning on a mountain top. There was a road beside the mountain I was on, about 300 feet below my level. two F-16 flew by about 100 feet below me. Beautiful picture, if only I could have gotten the camera out of my duffel bag in time. The rest of my time in Iraq, the camera was always unpacked and within arms reach.

It was arranged by the local flying club. The main event is some sort of weekend fly-in or rally. Probably been doing it for years. Maybe they had some sort of airshow on saturday afternoon and its developed from that. They seem very good at keeping it a secret. Best to keep an eye on the website in the spring to see what date it is on next year. http://www.merlinflyingclub.co.uk/

A wonderful picture Nige, I'd like to join in with a couple of pics of the first airshow at which I had a camera, Braiton (or something like that).

I keep a digital camera in the cab of my truck all the time. You never know what you'll see. Given the prices the media pays for exclusive shots these days, you never know when you'll score a shot that will support your hobby for a lifetime!

Got this pic at a recent air show in Michigan--They had 15 B-25's there--1/3 of the remaining airworthy B-25 fleet. It was quite a site when all 15 flew overhead--Had goosebumps for about 5 minutes. It was definitely a once in a lifetime moment.

Wow! A lot of good pictures! Not so many Lancasters and Hurricanes here in Latvia
Now I am just waiting for the Latvian Airforce to send one of their old Russian SAR helicopters overhead so I can snap a photo.
Thanks for sharing guys.
