That's awful. Does anyone know what happened? Why was that guy in the green plane so low and close to the other?

How terrible!
While I was at the Dayton air show, Jim LeRoy crashed his "Bulldog". He was finishing a loop and appeared to not pull up fast enough. The aircraft skidded about 300 feet down the runway before bursting into flames. He was evacuated via military medic chopper and died en route. An article is HERE. His wife and son were there. Very, very sad.

The two aircraft were recovering (landing) after their part of the performance. The P-51D was lead aircraft as the two were landing together. The P-51A was a little hot and overtook the D and its propeller struck the D just aft of the canopy and wiped the left horizontal stab off. The prop strike probably cause the A to torque roll to the right and pitch the nose up at the same time. Given the speed, altitude and forces from the collision the A veered to the right and flipped over landing upside down. The D immediately pitched forward riding to a halt on its nose. The pilot of the D was able to evac from the aircraft and ran to help the other pilot. Before he could cover half the distance the A burst into flames. The pilot of the D just dropped to his knees. Emergency crews were on location within seconds of the crash. Sad day for every involved and in attendance of the event.
