EDSG certainly sounds right. It’s odd that it came out slightly green. I used Humbrol 123 on a Sea Fury recently and if anything, it looked slightly blue in tone. Given that it was beside large areas of Sky (inevitably) and I work under filament lights, if there were any green in it, I would have expected it to show up in those conditions. Perhaps it’s nasty old paint?

Well I've been to the LHS during my lunch break today and bought a new tin of 123 and even the lid is a different shade to the one I have at home. After a quick search on the web I found that Humbrol 123 use to be Satin Dark Olive so this may explain the green colour of my Buccaneer. Hopefully i'll get the "GREY" coat on tonight so it can be left to dry before decalling next weekend.

The usual trouble with judging colour from photos but I don't see anything wrong with it (and I don't hink it looks green in the photo)! Can you get hold of another tin why not try that one as well on some old piece of plastic scrap to check it (or is it one of the discontinued Humbrol ones?).
Also, have you been trying to see what it looks like outdoors?

You must have posted the same time as me. I have tried looking at it while out doors and it looks an even deeper olive green. I’m still going with the idea that Humbrol have either changed the paint tint or just replaced the colour completely. When I get home I'll see if I can post a side by side comparison of the two tins of paint

Sorry to make it worse Allen, I was just trying to present you with a last straw !
I had absolutely no idea that there had been renumbering in the Humbrol range. On the other hand, I converted to acrylics in 1994 so I have missed the last decade or so of Humbrol development...

All this is just conjecture though as I'm not too aware of any changes Humbrol made apart from when they axed half of their paint range several years ago (maybe an early sign of the problems they inevitably faced) the "new" 123 was applied tonight an certainly look better. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so I couldn't get any pics. I did bring the paint tins home though and there is definitely a difference
The plot thickens but at least I'm back on track for decalling at the weekend.

I can see why it didn't help with daylight...
That old tin really is quite old since it is pre "Super Enamel". I have friends here in Sweden who would kill for those old tins, they say that the paint is vastly superior to Super Enamel.

And the one on the right is definitely what I used on that Sea Fury. I had no idea they'd actually re-used numbers in their paint range - I thought they'd just skipped the ones that were no longer in production. One to watch for in future. You live and learn, eh?

Thanks for the comments so far, The project continued this weekend with the Future/Klear applied yesterday and left over night for it to fully dry.
And then I spent most of the day applying the decals from the Xtradecal set and using some from the Airfix sheet. The Xtradecals were extremely thin and had a fair amount of carrier film and cringed at just the sight of any setting solutions. after all of them were applied a very small amount of Microsol was applied to trouble some areas and left to set.
Hopefully I'll get another coat of Klear on to seal the decals and then I can start the panel lining and weathering next weekend.
P.S. The client would like to have boarding ladders on the plane. Does any on know if I can get an after market set or have any references so I can scratch some myself

Hi Allen!
Looking good so far!
Did you get the pic I mailed to You?
Anyway, here It is again, for all to see:
The "new(?)" Humbrol 123 EDSG seems to be spot on for this version!
Cheers!

Hi Stefan I did get the email but haven't got round to replying as I've been busy getting other kits ready for the Bulldogs stand at IPMS (UK) Nationals this weekend coming (so no updates this week or for the next few weekends as I'm away) I don't suppose there's any pictures of the boarding ladders used by the RN in that book you have is there? as it could potentially be the one thing that could set this project back a bit

Hi Allen!
It´s OK, I was not sure I had the correct adress to you.
I did find some good pics of the ladders too, and I have mailed them to you.
Cheers!

Well its been a while as I was quite busy getting things ready for Scale Model World 07 in November and a few weekends away with the Air Cadets didn't help either. Now that i have got the brunt of my Christmas shopping out of the way I've finally managed to get some more done to the Bucc. The masking has been removed from the wheel wells and the undercarriage attached and painted along with the doors. The entire plane was coated in Klear/Future again and a wash of Paynes grey was applied to all the panel lines, nooks and crannies, etc. Once dried a coat of Humbrol 135 Satin Varnish was applied but for some reason it has dried matt. So I have bought another (newer) tin today and will hopefully get another coat on tomorrow.
Whilst waiting for the varnish to dry I've had a go at scratch building some boarding ladders using the two images that Stefan kindly sent me.
Hopefully they'll look OK once painted and in place

Very nice work Allen, I have this same kit with the bulk of it put together and I need to get the mountainous amount of filling done. I don't have to worry so much about the airbrake actuator joint as mine are going to be open, but man oh man do I feel your pain! This kit is a b***h and has caused a lot of blue air in my house.
Very well done, this is looking amazing!!

Hi Allen
It is fun to follow your build and see how much you can get from an old kit and AM stuff. Very inspiring.
Thanks for sharing you project

Hi Allen, I have just come across this and I love the build I too, like several others, started this kit, many moons ago. It too ended up put to one side, but still on the bench. After reading through this I must revitalise the project as the Bucc is a very different looking aircraft. I always intended to finish mine in desert pink as "Sea Witch Debbie".
Anyway thanks for proving that this can be built, you have done a wonderful job

Thanks Mal, I'm hoping to get some bench time in soon as this is close to the finish line, it's just the usual "oh i missed that bit" scenario. If I'm really lucky I might even have it finished before the Milton Keynes show so it can be seen in the flesh before i arrange for the customer to collect it.

Well just to prove that i hadn't given up, it's finished (well almost) all that left to do is a base for it, but as far as the plane is concerned it's finally done . Here's some pictures for all to enjoy

You have done such a lovely job I have been stimulated into ordering the bits and will take at least three times as long as you have to create the same thing. If I do have a criticism it is that the ladders should be red not the DSG you have painted them, but really it's just splitting hairs and red ladders might just detract from the model. Well Done.

Hi Allen
It looks superb! Now let's get this beauty on the frontpage where it belongs - ideally as a full Build Feature, but at the very least as an On Display!
All the best
