Hey Guys,
Just a trivia question. I know we've got some smart history buffs out there.
How many planes can you name that flew on both the Allied and Axis sides in World War Two?

Do you mean as part of the normal air force of the country involved, or as a captured aircraft?

I don't know if this has been done already. But this would be a neat idea for a campaign.

Here's three I can think of just of the top of my head:

Gloster Gladiator
Bristol Blenheim
Brewster Buffalo

All used bythe RAF or U.S.N/USMC and the Finnish AF in both the Winter War 39/40 and the Continuation War 41/44 against the Russians.

The Japanese built 487 L2D Tabby's, licence built DC-2's and -3's between 1939 and 1945.

Several Italian types flew for both the Regia Aeronautica/Aeronautica Nazionale Republicana and the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force.

Kind of a fine line isn't it? I know the Luftwaffe had some captured B-17s, P-51s, P-47s, etc., that they used mostly to aid in training their pilots in the vulnerabilities of these aircraft. But I was really thinking more along the lines of, planes that were actually used in regular service by both sides.
A few that came to my mind, thinking about it:
Douglas C-47
PZL P24
Avia B534
Hawker Hurricane
Gloster Gladiator
Dewoitine D520
I imagine there were very many French and Italian planes flown by both the Allies and the Axis.
Didn't Yugoslavia fly Me-109s too, and Fi-156s?

Hi! Too many to list. It isn't too easy task to check all the planes nation by nation. For example Finland had planes coming from multiple sources and was fighting in both sides depending on period. Here's a link, where You can find a list of kits of Finnish Air Force. http://ilmavoimat.hyperlink.cz/

..don't think you meant to imply that the Vichy French had Wildcats Chuck - they didn't ..but US Wildcats saw combat with Hawks during ' Torch ' (Allied landings in North Africa) in Nov 42....which is just about the only instance I can think of when US fighters opposed each other in combat...
super new history of the Curtiss Hawk in French Armee de l'Air service due early in the New Year from Lela Presse ...http://www.avions-bateaux.com

This isn't WW2, but do you know, did the Greeks and Turks ever fly U.S.-built aircraft against each other, in 1974 maybe? I'll have to check ACIG and see what I can find.

Neil - you are correct, I misspoke / mis wrote I did not intend to imply Vichy France had Wildcats. Sometime I write faster than I think, but usually it's the other way around

South African Air Force flew Junkers Ju 52, Heinkel He 115 and Junkers Ju 86. The Norwegian Air Force (or rather the Norwegian Navy IIRC) received some He 115 before the Germans invaded Norway in 1940. A least one of these escaped to Finland to be used by the FAF. Luftwaffe took over the remaining Dutch Fokker T VIII's after several Dutch aircrew succeeded in escaping to England with their aircraft to become 320 Sqn RAF.

The Russians used several ME 109s and some (one source says 12) FW 190Ds. The Yugoslavs used at least one FW 190 as already mentioned.

The Rumanans and Hungarians also used various Italian, Polish and French aircraft. Some of it obtained from the Germans who captured it in previous campaigns.
