I just took my Mach 2 Valiant out of the stash yesterday. It was put on hold for quite a while following my initial disapointment with the quality of the kit. However after having made a renewed inspection of the kit, the fact remains that it is a substandard quality kit but can be made into a fairly good model - with a lot of work, filler and elbow grease. As previously mentioned in another post, Meindert de Vreeze's build article http://www.xs4all.nl/~designer/models/valiant/valiant.htm is a very good help. Good printed references will also be very useful since the kit instructions leave a lot to be desired. The Aerofax book on the Valiant is wholeheartedly recommended. In fact Mike MacEvoy stated, when I met him, that he could hardly have completed his build without it. Also, there is a Warpaint on the Valiant just out. Furthermore, the kit decals are a joke. There is however a good alternative produced by Kits at War (AKA Dutch Decals).

Hi Guys Sorry for such a late reply. Thabks for your help with this. However on hannants they have this kit for around £50. What I am failing to see is that if it is such a porr kit, how can it go for this much money, if it was a fairly decent kit I may have been prepared to splash out on it!!! Oh well, Ill have to think about it and then ask my wallet .

It comes down to, if you want to play you are going to pay. I've built several short run / limited production kits, a couple of them have been from Mach2. The Mach2 kits sort of run the gambit from "I can work with that" to "Oh, my that will need some work", pretty typical for short run kits.

Mach2 has some interesting aircraft available in injected form, that aren't available anyplace else. Sooo if you want one, you pay the price in currency and work. To give Mach2 some credit other than availability, their more recent releases do seem to be a bit better molded, they are not comparable with "production" kits, they are "short runs". They are still not for the faint of heart, and require a lot of work to get a presentable model.

P.S. Over the years I've seen much worse. I'm working on just such a kit now.

Got to agree with the poor quality of the mach 2 kit, received mine a couple of weeks ago, and having looked at it it will need some work, but will be worth the effort.

Vulcan is complete just need to finish painting, and finishing the bomb bay and making the rest of the 1000lbs bombs, made 8 so far. bomb craddles, so all in all lots to do.

Hi guys
Sorry for a late reply!! Chuck, thanks for your help, I think I will have to think about this and whether I reckon I could make it presentable or not!

yeah airfix for the vulcan, revell for victor, and mach 2 for valaint. put the valaint fuselarge against the 1/72 scale warpaint drawings and the nose is a lot shorter so will need some work there, just best finish the vulcan first, but no rust, so far been doing the vulcan for about a month. not very happy with the air intakes, so have been working on them currently, filling and smoothing. need to take some photos of the progress. but will be able to put what i have learnt from doing the vulcan into when i do the others. first one one i've done in around ten years or more.

Airfix Vulcan . I have been working on it for what seems forever, nearly running out of filler trying to get the wings level. Air intakes are awful fit wise. Actually trying to find something good to say about it err its the right shape .

Hi guys
I must admit that I'm a little suprised to hear you don't like the Airfix kit. I built one a couple of years ago and it seemed ok to me, I did have to fill the nose with blu-tac though so it doesn't look like it's taking off with the access ladder down!!! Oh well, Ive put the Mach 2 Valiant down on the birthday list and will have to see what happens!!! Cheers. Nick
