Hi all!

I don't know if someone already noticed that, but Tamiya will release a Portable Photo Studio soon. Pictures and movies of this product can be found here.

I don't read japanese but it seems that the price will be around 15,000 yens (96€/140$). This is something interesting for everybody wanting to shoot high quality pictures of their models. If the price is indeed right, it's definitely on my "to buy" list!

Save yourself $90-$100 and go and buy the same thing (only alot higher quality product) from your local Wal-Mart.

The Tamiya one is nice, but I think my $140 would be better spent on other things, than a corrugated plastic cardboard box, with 50cents of plastic tubing and another $1 worth of cloth for the back ground.

At least the one at Wal-mart, comes in a nice case made of backpack material, opens up to a 16" X 16" X 16" cube, has the light filtering material on the 2 sides and the top (the Tamiya one only has it on the top), also comes with 2 lamps and a small tripod for your camera.

A much better value for your money I would think!!

Another alternative is a "Cubelite", I use the smallest version that comes in a small pouch where I keep it when it is not in use.

Hi Jean-Luc

That does seem a costly version of a common-place product - my one cost about £20 from Maplin. It might be cheap and cheerful by comparison, but it does the job perfectly for me. And if you want to see how to make a light-box for next to nothing, check this out.

All the best

This is a nice, inexpensive set up.

Hi all!

Thanks for all your replies! It seems that at this price (to be confirmed), there are indeed cheaper alternatives than the Tamiya reference. These Photo Studios are not easily available here in France though. Scott, do you have a link to the Wal-Mart product your mentionned?

The Maplin one that Merlin showed in the UK is very similar to the one I bought from Wal-mart, although I have to wonder if they have it set up properly in the photos, as it should have a top to it as well.

Mine is called Digital Concepts, Portable Lighting Studio.

Here is a link to one on Amazon.com, which is actually cheaper again than Wal-mart

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Concepts-Ps-101-Portable-Lighting/dp/B000FBF400

I couldn't find it again on the Wal-mart website, seems they have changed brands and offer different albeit more expensive versions of it now.

The Amazon link has about 20 or so reviews of the product, so it should be able to make up your mind on the subject. Really for $40 compared to the prices of the other ones, you really can't go wrong.
