I just finished this today. It was built as part of a challenge/build off with another modeler who lives north of me for something fun to do. Basically who could get theirs done the fastest. We started this past Thursday evening. Daniel finished slightly behind me, but he brush paints, so that being taken into consideration, I think I just squeeked by. I'm awaiting pics of his build as I type this. Pretty much OOB except for the aerial and the canopy hold wire. I plan on going back at some point later and adding some pre-painted PE belts as the cockpit came out really well, but looks pretty blah with no belts. Thanks for looking, comments welcome. "Q"

Hi Matthew!

Maybe this was a fast build but it doesn't look like you've rushed things at all. The end result is superb!

How did you do the front "tulip" and what colors did you use if I may ask?

The pictures are great two. A couple more, some close ups and it would make a great "On Display" feature for Aeroscale...

Matthew, great job. A really nice Karl that will look good in any collection. I have the same kit (although in a Revell box) and I am really looking forward to it.

Your result is very inspiring and a really nice benchmark to strive for.

Thanks for sharing

First off, thanks for the Kudos guys. To answer Jean-luc's question,

The tulip itself is the kit decals. I cut them up into more managable pieces, namely just idividual triangles, and used time, patience, and micro-set/sol to get them to go down. Had to do a little prodding and slicing here and there, but they finally conformed. Looking at my pics I can see some slight silvering, so I need to go in and pop a couple of small air pockets. The red on the nose is MM Insignia Red. I'm thinking I should have underpainted the nose with the camo colors as it doesn't quite match the tulip, it's close, but not exact. When I was testing the paint color, I put a small drop on one of the red decals I wasn't going to use, and it matched perfectly. Oh well, hind sight is 20/20. Thanks again for the kudos. I'll see about getting some more pics together for an "On Display" item.

Hi Matthew

I agree with Jean-Luc - this would make a great front-page On -Display!

All the best

Gorgeous 109. Lust the righ amount of weathering for my taste. How did you do the exhaust stain? I feel mine always look odd.

I started with Model Master US Army/USMC Gulf Armor Sand that was more thinner than paint, like 90/10 . Cranked the nozzle down on the Iwata and used short bursts to get a good mottle effect front to rear, and built up the color. Using Floquil NATO Tri-color Brown I did the same thing, but focused the color more towards the middle of the previous color. Finally, I added some flat black to this mixture and did the same thing, concentrating on keeping it in the middle of the pattern and working my way back, with the heavier concentration of color on the forward sections. Hope that helps. "Q"

very nice 109, love the camo and the exhaust stains. I can't see any silvering at all and the red looks fine.

I'll have to get me one of those 1/32 they look great.

cheers

Geez Matthew,
That is awesome! I can't believe that is a 'quick' build. I wish I could build that nice and quick.
Great stuff.
