The mottling along the fuselage looks great. Did you do it freehand or mask it? It's the one area that i have difficulty getting look realistic.Thank you,Bob

Hi Bob,
this is my first go at doing the mottling. I masked the upper fusleage and sprayed but then realised that the instructions called for a more "freehand" look so I just freehanded the bottom and then mottled the sides. It wasn't easy as I am still learning how to use my airbrush and what air pressure and paint consistancy to use. I ended up usning the lifecolour straight from the bottle without thinning and had to keep cleaning the tip of the airbrush every minute or so. I actually had a few "oopsies"- an example is on the rear right where the big patch of RLM 74 is, it started out as a mottle but ended up as one big band.
Being only my second plane I am happy with the results.

cheers

Looking great so far!
I think your mottle came out well. Just remember, if you aren't happy with any of it you can always go back with some of the RLM 76 and touch up.

I hope my Emil comes out as nice whenever I can get to painting it!

Looks good, Anthony.

The mottling of the airframe came out very well. The camouflage pattern on the wings should have been more hard edged I think. As I recall it the camouflage on the wings was hard edge on the G versions just as on previous versions, but maybe some of the Luftwaffe experts can comment on this.

Under all circumstances is is a very good build and looks very nice. Looking forward to see it with some markings on.

Thanks for sharing

thanks Bob, Greg and Jesper.
I think you are right Jesper, someone has already pointed out that it should have been a hard edge- oh well put that down to a newbie mistake.
I finished the decals which gave me a bit of grief. I found the backing shett to be very thick and the decals thin which made it hard to transfer from to the model and most of the time they curled up on themselves which resulted in a couple of wrecked decals. Has anyone else found this to be the case? and if so any tips for next time?

I have given the model another coat of gloss and once dry I will do a panel line wash.

I also started my first ever bit of scratch building- adding a brake line to the legs. I think it looks ok what do you guys think?

Cheers

Hi all,
I have been busy. I did a panel wash- initially with oils and white spirits but this ate at the paintwork (I realised later that the white spirits must have attacked the Humbrol gloss cote?) luckily it was on the lower fuselage towards the rear and I can lessen the damage by weathering.
I ended up finding a recipe for a "sludge wash" using acrylic paint, water and washing detergent and this worked well.

On Thursday I decided to have a crack at making a base for this machine. I found some cheap frames ($2.50Au ea) and gave it a teak stain, followed by 2 coats of clear on the friday.

Yesterday I masked it and put some plaster down and while still wet sprinkled some dirt into it.

while still wet I removed the tape to get a neat edge- yay

this morning I wasn't happy with the dirt as it didn't set into the top of the plaster well and most of it came off, so I sprayed some wood glue mixed with water and then some more dirt-much better!

I have'nt neglected the plane, today I also did some of the little things to finish it off, I did some scratch building by making the cannon barrels, this is my first go at doing something like this and it is not perfect but at least I don't have to attempt to drill out the kit barrels

More photos later

Ok, I'm calling this one done . and I finished it in 2 weeks and 1 day! I had a few problems along the way but learn't a lot.
With the base I painted the dirt and then drybrushed it a lighter colour. I followed this by adding static grass and some bushes and dry leaves( the theme is that this is parked near a forest edge) I also glued on the name plaque.

With the 109 I finished off the gun barrels, antenae and loop antenae, dry brushed some dirt pigment into the lower half and wheels etc and un-masked the canopy. I am happy with the final result.
pics-

I'll post some more pics on it its base shortly.
cheers

Final pics

Any comments welcome.
Now I need to decide what to build next. I recently got an Eduard Hellcat and a BF110 with their seperate etch set, I also have a Dragon JU188 and Eduard etch set in the stash- suggestions?
Cheers everyone

Hi Anthony!

Nice work overall. But there are two things which are not so good. The antenna mast should be vertical, not leaned and, more importantly, you've glued the landing gear backwards! The oleo cissors should point at the rear. I hope you can change that because it really makes your 109 look strange.

Other than that you did a fine job...

ha ha I'm an idiot, thanks Jean-Luc- another newbie mistake. I didn't think they looked right but the instructions are misleading as they don't show the cissors at the back in the picture. I'll see if I can fix it???
cheers

Anthony:
Great to see it done. This is one of my favorite 109 schemes and you did it justice in my book. As others have commented, I also love the base. Thanks for sharing.
