Just so I don't get too bored with all that PE in my A-20 build for twin spinners, I'm going to get a little extra practice in with a nice, hopefully quick 1/72 build. Being out of the hobby got me out of practice, and I need to brush up on techniques. This will be a straight forward build with some weathering at the end, nothing too fancy. I do have the True Details cockpit for this, so the cockpit should look nice.
Here's the kit, it's an older boxing, but I don't know how old. It's exactly the same as the new boxing, just the styrene's are two diferent colors (new one's gray)
a quick test fit looks very promising!
I decided to assemble the wings before attaching the lower wings to the fuselage. they fit nice.
I know there was a time in my life when 1/72 didn't seem SO small, but i guess it looked different from the eyes and fingers of a 12 year old! Still, it's so tiny
Again, more tiny-ness. that seat is about a quarter inch (judging by the graph paper)
it's all set in now and about ready to get the wings thrown on there. then we'll see about all that paint prep work.
I hope this isn't just another boring build that takes up space on here, but I really enjoy posting my progress and getting feedback here. It really does help to motivate me. There are so many amazing models and modelers here, it's just amazing to be a part of the community!

On the contrary, not boring at all. You build looks like it is coming along quite nicely. I'm excited to see more...

@ Allen: thanks, I'm very glad to hear that!
Update for tonight, got the plane all together, the big parts anyway, and primed, and a little something new I've never tried before.
fits together real nice
I made my own 1000 grit flexifile
the right wing is a little lower than it should be, but I can glue it and just hold it in place until it dries
I had to grind the ring the cowling fit on to down to make it fit
So this is my first go at preshading. I'll have to see how it goes. Primer is Tamiya Gray
Overall this kit is shaping up to be pretty nice. Hope you guys agree!

Thanks for posting. I can't even see a 1/72 plane in most cases. Looks great so far

Alright, so I'm nearing the end of this build, and lets just say it hasn't come without some problems! You'll get to see my fun at the bottom! anyway, I got all of the colors painted, and I'm beginning to find where I got lazy on my research. The Decal profile I looked at said that Pappy's plane was a F4U-1D. Wrong. It's a 1A. well, I'm not entering this plane in any competitions or anything, it's just fun, so that's how it will stay, hopefully. here's where I stand.
I put too thick a coat of paint on, and the preshading is hidden. woops!
So if you look in my first picture, there's a Jo Han kit right behind the Hase. Well, it had Pappy's markings in it, but it's not the greatest kit. i figured I'd just use the decals. well, the decals weren't first rate, but worked. only problem is the kill markings and "lulubelle" are horribly out of scale.
this is where I got unhappy. I don't even know what I did, just that I was handling the plane and it fell apart on me. It started out just the back, and I tried to pull it out enough to get some glue on it, then it really fell apart.
So, I'm taking a break for now (not too happy), but I'll get this finished soon! Hope you like!
edit : I swear I never saw that seam up the middle of the fuselage until I hit it with the brown wash. didn't show up under primer or paint!

Stick with it Eric.
Looks like nothing that can't be fixed anyway. You could have come across a revolutionary way to store models so they don't take up much space - detachable wings ...

that's not a bad idea! Now if only i can find a way to make them snap apart and back together (and not the breaking type of snap!)

Blimey I wish I could build something so quick!
But then I see your secret,,you didnt glue it together
That looks to be an easy fix Eric, and while you working on that area you can fix the seam as well ...see every cloud has a silver lining
I wouldnt worry about covering up the pre shading,,Ive been doing it for a long time,,LOL

Now with the wings off it reminds me of many of my projects I wish I could juggle two projects at one time and get one done. Nothing a little Tenax won't fix.

Hi Eric,
Boring, never It's always great to see pics of models in progress. Even when you have been at this game a gazillion years you can always learn something and that something can be gleaned from the newest of talents, so keep posting
Everything looks good and I like the new storage method
Pre-shading is very difficult to achieve when using dark colours, try filling in the panels, leaving the shading then going over the shading and blending it all in. That's a very simplistic way of describing it and it is still all to easy to hide the shading, but keep trying

actually, what I keep marveling at is that you can get good (non-blurry) pictures of a 1/72nd scale aircraft in less than ideal conditions and I can't even manage that with 1/48th scale!

Nige: The only reason my builds are done so fast is because I have nothign better to do with my time! College life can get boring sometimes. plus, this build isn't anywhere near as involved as 675 polka dots!
Taylor: The whole two planes at one time thing, well, I kinda just put the A-20 aside while I built this i knew it would be quick.
Mal: I agree, I really love to come on here and see any plane in progress. Seeing other work gets me more motivated! I'm going to try painting the panels individually next time. It'll just take a lot longer. But that's modeling for you.... patience! at least that's what I have always said
So, It's all done. All together, weathered, and not in two pieces
there are my horribly inaccurate and out of scale markings, but I don't care. I like it!
I love this picture. All I need is the flaps down and a cool background, and this would almost look real! I think anyway
I know it went by fast. I hope you all enjoyed it. Good practice for my upcoming aces high projects . I hope I can handle two more in 48th scale! nice thing is they'll be a Hasegawa F4U-4 and a Tamiya F4U-1 Birdcage. not really fiddly kits!

Excellent job, Eric. A good and quick build despite the flak damage in the process The decals might look inaccurate, but if you are having fun and like the result, you got what you came for - at least in my world
