DH-2 tail boom question

I have the Blue Max DH-2. When constructing the tail booms, should the uprights' cross section be parallel to the airflow or to the booms (which angle in from the wings to the tail)? To the airflow would be logical, but harder to construct. I haven't been able to tell from any photos I've seen.....

I built this kit many, many years ago. I reckon that the struts should be in line with the air flow.

keeping in mind of course, that the airflow in that area would be extremely turbulent (Prop Wash etc.)... One wonders whether the rudder and elevator would have been more effective if they had less surface area?

the sturts should be in line with the deriction of the tail booms , i'm scratch building this aircraft in 1/48 scale . I also have eduards kit in 1/72 scale and from what i can tell from my ref , that is how they should be if i'm wrong on that please let me know
