I picked up the F-105D Thunderchief at Wal-Mart for $10.97. I'm going to build a big jet after all these armor related group builds are completed. I see Black Box makes a cockpit for it, anyone know of other aftermarket for it? I'll pass on the cockpit since it seems to run around the $20 range. Neat set of decals comes with Nazi kill markings that the pilot earned while flying Thunderbolts in WW2.

Sabot! My man! You bought a 105D!

I am so proud of you! Anyway I am glad that you did. I am all to sure that you will find it really fun to build. I also built one, and finished it last month! I did my own markings though. I made up the plane, it was "Hanoi Express" and its pilot was LT. Jimmy Degrassi.

In my opinion it doesn't need to much aftermarket parts. I did a reveiw on the F-105G on this site, and thats much the same as the D only a backseater.

I reccomend building it without any other detail parts. But you always can, and if you do or don't I will bet that you have a great time building it! :-) I did!

Rob, it was between this kit and a 1/32 Dauntless as to what would be my next project. The Dauntless won out but not before I did some research on the F-105. Besides the Black Box stuff, here's some stuff I found:

1. Eduard makes a detail set (combined interior and exterior) and a mask set.
2. Legend Productions makes a cockpit set.
3. Teknics makes a set of brass cast landing gear (I have heard these are recommended as the kit gear are tiny and have a hard time supporting the weight of the kit).

:-) I've had one of these babies in my stache for a long time. I started to re-scribe it but didn't get very far. Built up the are very impressive. I would pass on a cockpit but a seat might be good. Is there one? :-)

One thing I forgot to mention. I have heard it's a tailsitter so some nose weight will be required. I'll also publish a David Aungst build of a F-105 for some inspiration... :-)

Thanks guys. I did a search for Eduard and Black Box so I knew about them. I just wasn't sure if an AM set was "required" per aircraft gurus. I printed out the Eduard detail set instructions and they look more involved than I want to do for an aircraft and again, the BB set would no longer make my $11 purchase a "bargin".

Definitely will not rescribe panel lines (sorry, wouldn't know which ones should be raised or lowered any way). This might be an OOB jet with a nose weight added.

:-) Wish I could avoid re-scribing the panel lines but I have to do it. I am compelled to I guess because of my finishing method. Funny thing is I hate doing it, but sitting next to me as I type are Monograms B-24 Liberator and Revells re-boxing of Monograms B-26 Marauder. Both have raised panel lines and I'm looking at starting them soon. I was thinking of doing an article, on re-scribing, I'm no expert but I do have a little trick which seems to help me and might be useful to others :-)

I think that the kit is perfect just for OOB projects. Now the 1/32 vesion would be a super detail project.Oh 2 things Rob.
1 is and you have probably already heard this is that there are four triangular shapes underneath the nose. You need to get rid of those because they are for the G-version.
2 is that I actually took some photos of a Thud in the Ohio Express markings over Spring Break this year.It was at the Eglin Air Force Base Armament Museam.Nice place. They have the panel open so you can see the Vulcan cannon inside the fuselage which is pretty neat.I'll try and get them up on the net but I may not be able to.
