Hi guys
I have just picked up Revell's 1/32 F14A Tomcat i dont normaly go for modern jets im a ww2 warbird kinda guy but this model seemed nice so i decided to give it a go.
Im currently gathering my research lost of pics data ect on the plane and i have found a pic of a model that has what seem to be yellow safety caps over the tips of the missles.
Can anyone tell me what they are actually called and where can i get some ????
Thanks guys

Hello Dave,
The only thing I can think of what your describing are the Sidewinder missile tip covers. There are no aftermarket products from them, so you’ll have to scratch build them. I’d say it’s an easy task, just need so sort of hollow plastic tube to slid over the Sidewinder tip. Then maybe wrap it in a tissue or tape to make it canvas like. Hope this helped and looking forward to you F-14.…which marking are you doing it in!
Happy Modeling,
Joe

Hi joe
yeah that helps thanks although i think you are thinking of a slightly different cover to me..
Here is a link to what i mean . http://scaleair.com/Tomcatgb/Entries/041-050/046/entry046.htm
at the moment im not really sure what markings to do iv been browsing online for them but just cant decide on what decals to get theres so many
The model at this stage is just taped together so i can get an idea for the fit and see what filling and sanding im letting myself in for.
Even like this the model looks quite impressive
Thanks

Hi Dave, to my knowledge there isn't any after market stuff of what your after (I've tried looking myself). Here's some scans, taken from the "Uncovering the Grumman F-14 A/B/D Tomcat" book by Danny Coremans (this has to be the most used/read reference on the tomcat) that you could use for reference if you go down the scratch build route.
Hope this helps

Hey Dave, that's pretty much what I thought you were after...so what idea did you come up with. Yeah I will agree with you on how impressive the F-14 is, it has one of the sexest profiles For markings well VF-103 Jolly Rogers or VF-111 Sun Downers are the coolest looking markings. I have my things together for a 1/48th F-14 final Tomcat cruise markings.

Hi Joe.
well i used to work in a garden center.. now you may be wondering where im going with this but we used to sell this type of plant food that came in a small bottle with a rubber twist off cap that was identical to the shape of the sidewinder covers also they were perfect for 1/32 and 1/48 scale.
However i went to my old place of work just today and guess what.. they don't sell them anymore !!
so im right back to square one grrrr
As for the paint scheme i do like the grim reapers i think that they look really nice.
I started to do a few things on the plane i just couldn't help myself hehehe.
So far iv done the weapons and made a start on the cockpit. Tonight im going to drill the tiny holes
in the switch locations so i can thread some stretched sprue through the holes then trim them down . iv found this is a great way to make realistic looking toggle switches.. also for the glass radar screens im going to get some clear green paint lay the instrument panel down flat on its back and let a bead of paint drip onto the round screen face then when it drys it looks slightly raised and makes a very nice screen indeed....
Happy building
