What i use to remove seems is sanding stick or I have a tool called a seem scraper Which you can get through Squadron ( www. squadron.com ) or your local hobby shop should have this tool . The tool can be used for right or left handed . I always prime my models first so any flaws that I have missed or if seems need more putty . Then it can be fixed at this stage in the build .

For me it depends how marked the line is. Very light seams can be removed with the edge of a knife/scalpel blade drawn along them (with the edge nearly perpendicular to the seam, so that it moves sideways along the seam, rather than cutting it away, if you see what I mean). Heavier ones don't respond well to that so it's out with the file, sanding stick, whatever it takes to remove it and get back to a smooth finish. The real awkward customers are mould slips - you think it's a seam but it's misaligned parts with a step between their halves. For them it's more drastic surgery, like filler and lots of sanding.
