Theres been a bit of talk in the SIG recently about a probable Thunderbolt group build so I thought Id throw it open as a campaign proposal.
"CAVE TONITRUM"
Beware The Thunderbolt.
Provisional start date Jan 1st 2009.
Duration of at least 6 months, perhaps a year.
Build a P-47, any scale. Unusual paint schemes encouraged. National Guard, South American Airforces etc.

I'm on! Probably in the wrong company to mention it but OK then, I'll tell you: I have never built one.

Hi Chris and Magnus.
In 1:72 for either a P-47D Razorback or Bubbletop Tamiya.
In 1:48. Again Tamiya for these and theres the M available also.Academy and Hasegawa have a large range of P-47D's available.
The Tamiya Razorback coverts easily into a late C model with the Loon Models resin cowling.
For a P-47N, in 1:72 you are limited to the Heller/Italeri offerings, neither of which are up to modern standards IMHO.
In 1:48th theres the Revell/Monogram P-47N, and Trumpeter have released a 1:32 scale version.
1:32 fans will find plenty of choice in the Trumpeter and Hasegawa range.
Id love to see some of the more unusual schemes represented in the campain, and also South American and National Guard subjects, rather than a parade of olive drab/grey Thunderbolts, even though that sounds fantastic in its own right!

Hmmm. I have got three projects running until retirement in 2031, all in 1:48. But I want to build a big scale plane too sometime. Why, Nigel, do you have to have a crush on the Thunderbolt? It's so huuge!
But then again, by 2009 my workbox might have evolved into a workspace. And I do like colours. Time to get a P 47 book then. Count me in as "most likely", and brace yourself for all the odd questions!

I must confess I haven't built one either, but I would be in as I quite fancy a go at a Tamiya bubbletop..

Sounds like a go for me. I have 2 Tamiya P-47s (1/48 Razorback and M). Now if I can only figure out what shade of blues the 63rd FS used for upper surface camo.

Hi all!
I´m in as I take any excuse to build another Thunderbolt!
If the campaign is running over at least six months, I´ll probably go for a 1/32 Trumpeter P-47N.
I will do this aircraft as "2 Big & 2 Heavy/Short Snorter", my absolute favourite P-47 schemes, EVER!
Shorter time and I´ll build a 1/48 Tamiya P-47D/M, or a 1/32 Hasegawa P-47D "Bubbletop".
Anyway we go, I can promise a lot of NMF, bright colors and beautiful girls!
Let the party begin!
Cheers!

Nige,
At the moment count me in,
Dare I say it I'm doing a Group build over at the Opposition(Fine Scale models an F4U)
Is that the sound of a beating I hear it finishes early next year.
So I should be a starter,
But I may have to study so a 12mth build would be good.
Chris

Wow,,
I turn my back for 5 minutes and everyone signs up
Ok,,I have a gap between tours coming up very soon so I will officially submit this as a campaign. The build time will be 12 months( give me chance to get a 1:32 T'bolt done as well!
I dont have the answer for that one Im afraid, but check out the P-47 SIG in the WW2 forum for a bit of an exclusive regarding the 61st FS!

Thanks to my Fiancee, I have recently acquired a 1/32 Hasegawa T-bolt. I'll throw myself in this build as well. In 12 months I should be able to get it completed.
The only 2 problems I have is:
1: Keeping my hands off it until the start date
2: Which naked lady to put on the nose of her.
Oh the hazards of being a modeller!!!

..count me in too...having recently picked up two copies of the Danny Morris' classic 'Aces & Wingmen' (beautiful example of the 1972 original edition & the 1989 revised reprint) I shall be scouring the pages for a nice NMF subject with large naked lady artwork !! - currently have two examples in the research/planning stages ! Alternatively Witold Lanowski's black 56th FG 'M' looks to be a great subject and the pilot's story is an incredible one..he was technically a Polish civilian whilst planning and flying combat sorties, flew for months with no pay ( the 61st pilots did a monthly collection for him) , and didn't in fact receive his USAF back-pay for the period Oct 44 - August 45, when his services were abruptly dispensed with, until 1964 ..!! ($4,000)
who knows, I might even invest in the new 24th scale Vintage Fighter Series Jug having examined it at Trucks n' Tracks...looks to be a super kit......but then again I might not...

Mike Gladych and the Polish pilots that Gabreski brought to the 56th were treated in the same way. Ive heard that when he was "dismissed" Mike Gladych threw his medals across the office and walked out. Who can blame them.
Good to see you refer to the 61st FS M's as being black Neil. I guess you read the SIG "exclusive" from Russ Kyler?
There a 1:24th P-47M on the way from Vintage in "Lorene" livery soon as well. Should be a lovely kit by all accounts.

Nige,
I have a Tamiya P-47M. I believe the P-47M is built of an airframe later than the D-25. I am noting that the floor on the kit is "corrugated". Is this correct?

yes indeed Nige....as it happens I've just been watching his interview on the IWM 'Great Fighters' video (1992) ...good to hear he's still going strong..
..getting back to the Polish contingent, Lanowski became a naturalised Briton and joined the RAF...thats how disgusted he was ..more in Danny Morris' 'Aces & Wingmen II' vols 1 & 2 ....
the VFS T'bolt is selling for 65 quid I believe..was on offer at the show for under fifty...

Thunderbolt P-47D28 and onwards,(including the M's and N's) were "smooth" floored. Earlier models were "corrugated".
There are 2 cockpits included in the Tamiya M kit and the instructions show the correct cockpit to use.
