It looks like a He-51 at first. However I cannot read the text on the photo, but it does not seem to be in German. Maybe Romanian.

Hope it helps.

Hi Kelly

I think it is a R-5SSS.

the inscription is hard to read (Sütterlin is not easy to read for us grow up with latin letters):

?????
russ. Doppeldecker
bei ???istopol (IMO it is too long for Sewastopol)
August 1941

hope someone can read the missing parts

cheers

Steffen

I think you are right, Steffen.

Could the first word be something like "Abgetroffende", "Abgeschossende" or "Abgetreffende"? My German is not what it has been, so I am probably spelling it wrong.

Hope I have not just invented new German words

Just my 10 eurocents

Hi Jesper

"Abgeschossener" could well be .. IIRC "SCH" had som kind of ligature in Sütterlin and ... it also makes sense.

Could not find a proper town. The only one besides Sewastopol is Tschistopol .. which also does not fully fit the inscription (IMO)

cheers

OK
what i understand so far is that it says a downed biplane in or near sarnvistopol? or am I way off here? I cannot make out the writing at all so I appreciate what you guys have done.
Thanks,
Kelly
oh and it does resemble the R-5SSS but appears to have bomb racks under the wings.

Hi Kelly

yes, I am sorry, should have translated it:

Abgeschossener
russ. Doppeldecker
bei ***istopol
August (?) 1941

downed
russian biplane
near ***istopol (the first letter could also be a G .. I am too bad in reading this handwritten German)

Rowan has wirtten a review about the rest Model kit of the R-5sss
(it includes bombs)

HTH

cheers
