Hobby Boss F-105D ThunderchiefPosted: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 06:01 AM UTC
For many years the only F-105D that was readily available in 1/48th scale was the old Monogram offering, but now Hobby Boss have one too.
An inbox review of the new "Thud" on the block.

Hi Andy

How does it compare to the Monogram offering besides engraved vs. raised panel lines?
cheers

Thanks Steffen.
I will try and dig out my Revell re-box of the 105 and compare.
From memory the HB one is a better colour, the Revell kit is moulded in a horrible brown colour . There is no rivet detail on the Revell kit, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your taste.
Internal detail is way ahead in the HB kit. The moulding is a lot crisper, but then the Monogram kit has been re-released countless times.
Fit wise I haven't found out yet as both kits are unbuilt, but the HB one is getting built straight away .
Accuracy wise, they both look like a F-105 so that does me lol.

Many thanks Andy!!
I am most interested in the shape. I have a F-105G just re-released by RoG (grey plastic) but the tool is showing its age in some places, Still a large kit for little money. (I also have a green plastic Monogram F-105 in the stash somewhere, forgot which version)
cheers

I just dug out the Revell one and there really isn't any comparison, one is a detailed model kit and the other err isn't. Mind you the Revell kit comes with a pilot .
I shall build both kits at the same time, otherwise the Revell one will never get built .

Nice Review Andy!
And what an attractive bikini the pin-up is wearing!
Apart from the amount of flesh on display, the way the decal is printed is very interesting - the shading looks much better than on most kit decals. It looks rather like a laser-printed scan, but I've only ever seen that on aftermarket and home-produced decals. Is there a dot pattern evident if you look closely and does it have a standard carrier film?
All the best

Thanks Rowan.
There is very little carrier film around the bikini clad beauty and to the naked eye, no dots. The decal really does look if it has been painted rather then printed.

Andy,
Another super review by you!
I welcome this new 1/48 Thud--one of my three favorite Century Series (not that there were many to choose from )! Yet ANOTHER must-have to start on immediately

Thanks Fred.
It is a long awaited and very welcome addition for a new 1/48th F-105.
When ever I think of aircraft that participated in the Vietnam war, the Thud is always the first to mind.
As for starting, the Revel and HB kits are both on the workbench. I shall start a build blog.

Thanks for the review, Andy. Very interesting to see a new Thud kit in 1/48.
I am really tempted by the shark mouth decals normally used on the G Wild Weasel version of the Thud. But on the other hand a naked girl on the upperside of the nose. Hmm... tempting
Thanks for your effort

Thanks Jesper.
The naked lady straddling the nose is the scheme I will be doing for the Thud .
Now I have just got a x10 macro lens I couldn't resist having a little play, and yes, there are dots.

Hi Andy
10x macro - very cool! And instant results - the print pattern makes a lot of sense (I couldn't quite see how they'd achieved the apparent shading without something along those lines).
All the best

Her complexion just needs a lil' more concealer...
(pardon the double entendre pun...)
BTW, here's and in-action pix of Miss Galore making a hook-up

Hi there
Is the box-art based on a real encounter? Fully-laden, semi-inverted and probably losing momentum with a MiG in close; it doesn't look like a good place to be...
