While spending the week off work I've managed to get round to finishing Tamiya's 1/48 P-51 Mustang the kit was built OOB with the only addition of etch belts from Eduard. the Kit was sprayed using various shades of Alclad's aluminium's. the decals I used were a set of PYN up which I acquired just before Meteor closed down. Enough rambling here the pics.

The nose art during construction

Finished pics

Painting the spinner was the hardest part as I couldn't seem to get the lines of tape straight enough and it also seemed a shame to hide that wonderful nose art under the grime of an oil wash and the exhaust staining .

Think I might do another P-47 next as a warm up for Nige's Campaign next year (after I've finished a Hayabusa bike for the Bulldogs "Poles Apart" build and fixed my Corsair after the wing fold mechanism broke )

As always comments and suggestions are welcomed

Cheers

Allen

Looks great Allen!
Well done on the spinner masking, and the panel line wash is particularly effective.
10/10 for the NMF. fabulous job and I hope I get to see it soon, Medway perhaps?
Are the invasion stripes painted on?
As for your aircraft recognition?
0/10 for that one mate,,your Mustang is the oddest looking P-47D Ive ever seen
Im sure Rowan will be able to edit the thread title when he comes back.

Hi Nige,

Thanks, I do like using Alclad for NMF especially when i can vary the panels with different shades. Medway is looking pretty slim at the moment.

Yes the invasion stripes are painted as I was going to use some of Mal's masks for the Insignia but wanted to get the kit finished.

Doh... I'm obviously confused as I have several Tamiya P-47's staring at me waiting to built. Hopefully Rowen can change this to P-51D

Cheers

Very nice Mustang Allen. Love that nose art.

According to littlefriends.co.uk (a fantastic site) P-51D 44-14722 belonged to the 362nd FS, 357th FG. It was flown by Lt. Matthew S Martin. This a/c was lost Dec 5 1944. The pilot was taken as a POW.

There you go Allen!

Nice job on the Mustang - I'm particularly impressed with how well the decals have gone down on the n/m finish - not a hint of carrier film showing.

All the best

Thanks Carl /Matt, Matts correct with the A/C details, the other interesting thing to not is that Lt. Matthew S Martin went the entire war with out a single confirmed kill. I was going to use this for the Aces High Campaign until I found that out, Doh...

Rowen Thanks for changing the title, I was impressed by the decals as well, It's a shame that they were a limited rum (300 I believe) and now definitely OOP as they were done and sold by Meteor Productions.

I'm going to submit some better photos (when the weather improves) as a feature do we email them to you still?

Cheers

I love the mustang!

and this is a very fine example.

Maybe it is time that I stop building jets and turn my attention to propellers for a while

Great finish. The NMF and panel line wash compliment each other very well.

Thank you Mike. Sorry to hear the loss of you uncle.

The kit is the 1/48 Tamiya kit but the decals were limited edition after market ones by PYN-Up Decals that are now out of production.

Allen,
Math Martin was my dad. The family is very excited to see a model of this plane. You did an excellent job you did on this model it looks perfect. We only have 3 pictures of the plane. One shows the artist, the crew chief for the plane. I believe his last name was Childs. The plane was assigned to my dad in late august or early Sept. I know he had it by the time of operation Market Garden. The plane blew a cylinder east of Frankfurt on Dec. 5, 1944 and went down. The 357th was escorting bombers going to Berlin. Dad spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft 1.
Let me know if you are interested in more information about the plane or my dad.

Hi John, I would love any information or pictures that you have of the Plane and your Father. I always find it nice to see the information or pictures of the real aircraft next to the models that I depict. It gives a sense of realism to the model.

Please feel free to email or PM me.

Regards

Allen
