Some WWI aircraft ( Fokker E series, Oeffag built Albatros DIII ) had engine cowlings that were "engine-turned" which gave a random "whorled" effect. Can anyone please tell me how to get this effect in 1/48 scale?
Thanks

Try this on scrap plastic to get the feel. First 3-5 coats of Testors buffable aluminum. Next a "dull" edged drill bit at low speed. Walk the drill bit at low speed over the surface at a steady pace, not leaving it in one spot too long. Viola or Whallah if you will.

I agree with most of the last answer. A pencil eraser works real good used in the same way. Justb trim it down and try it on some scrap plastic first. I believe Dremel also makes a rubber bit to. Have used it to make the engine turned dash for a Trans Am model car.

I have seen it done by spraying the cowl black...and using a thin brush paint a random squiggle pattern in silver chrome paint all over the cowl. after it has cured, overspray a light, thin coat of silver over the entire cowl, and build out the colour until satisfied..overspray with clearcote ..it looks really good when finished
