I'm building a Roden Fokker D.VII (1/48th scale), and have gotten to the point where I'm applying the decals. After hearing all the criticisms about Roden's decals, and after using the kit crosses, personal markings, etc, and seeing how they are impervious to setting solutions, I chose to use Eagle Strike Lozenge.

So far I have laid down the top color lozenge on the bottom wing. The decals have responded very well to setting solution (Micro system). I oriented the decal strips chordwise (as I learned to do here through the excellent how-to which appeared here previously--I'm sorry I can't remember the gentleman's name to thank him!). Now I'm kinda stuck and need help on how to proceed.

The help I am looking for is: exactly what are the mechanics of applying lozenge decals?

I took the strip of decal (representing the "bolt" of cloth), and cut it into pieces just slightly longer than the chord of the wing. I applied these pieces to the wing so a little extra material was hanging off both the leading and trailing edges of the wing. Now what do I do? I was thinking of taking a bit of sandpaper and carefully abrading away the excess decal film from the LE and TE, then applying the ribtapes, trimming them to length, then applying lozenge to the bottom of the wing and going through the same procedure as for the top of the wing.

Does that make sense? Is there a better way to do this?. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Karl

Greetings Karl;

To remove any excess hanging off the edges of the wing after the lozenge has dried. Use the face of your thumbnail and burnish the edges until the lozenge decal falls away, There is another method but this will get you started.

Hi Karl,

That's a good tip of Stephen's for Eagle Strike Decals.

When I printed my own using Microscale Paper, I trimmed the excess with new number 11 blade.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen.

Stephen, thanks for the link to your series on lozenge. That is invaluable information.

No worries. The Eagle Strike were my favorites for many years. Next time try the Microsculpt versions since Eagle Strike is not available any more. You will be pleasantly surprised.
