My Mosquito is from 23 Squadron. It's R.A.F.

I need to know if 23 Squadron operated from grass or paved runways in England.

Thanks! :-)

no 23 sqn operated from little snoring in norfolk, and as there is no present airbase with that name i would have to say that it would almost certainly have been a grass strip,

it was common practice to fly spitfires, hurricanes and mosquitos from grass strips because of their light weight.

hope that answers your question!

This would depend on the time frame you're trying to depict, as squadrons moved around alot. According to the Modelers Data File from SAM Publications, these were the airfields where 23 Sqd. were based:

Began Mosquito ops. July '42 RAF Ford
UK based July '42-Sept '42 Ford, Manston, Bradwell Bay
Overseas Nov'42-May'44 Luqa, Malta, Pomigliano, Alghero
returned to UK May '44-June'44 Little Snoring, June'44-Sept'45 Wittering, Coltishall, Church Felton, Horsham St Faith, West Malling.

They operated:
NF II May'42-Aug'43
B IV June'43?-Sept'45
NF30 & NF36 post-war till 1951

HTH

Edit.
My apologies, after re-checking my info I find I made an error with the 1944- locations. They should be:

returned to UK May-June '44
Little Snoring June '44-Sept '45
Disbanded Sept '45
Reformed, RAF Wittering Oct '46
then other stations till 1951.

Also found this info about Little Snoring aifield

Hi Chip. I've loked up on the airfields given by ukgeoff. According to Millitary Airfields of the British Isles (by Willis and Hollis), the landing areas are as follows:
Little Snoring............concrete
Ford............................Tarmac & wood chippings
Manston.....................concrete and tarmac with 500yard grass extension
Bradwell Bay.............tarmac & asphalt
Wittering.....................grass
Coltishall....................steel matting (Sommerfeld track)
Church Fenton..........concrete & tarmac
Horsham St Faith.....concrete
West Malling..............steel matting (Sommerfeld track)
I guess you have the full range to choose from there.
