What's the worst model you've bought? I don't mean technically (i .e.accuracy, detail, panel lines e.t.c. ) just the state of the thing in the box.
I recently acquired Revell,s 1/32 Seafire Mk1B from a friend (who ordered a Spitfire without his glasses on) and have been amazed at the state of it.
More flash than mouldings and some parts virtually unusable. I've only been back a couple of years but can safely say this is the worst I've seen (yet)
Looking on the bright side I've decided to see it as a challenge. Hoping the fit is OK!
Cheers
Steve

Well, this can end in a severe flame war and as this site lives from sponsors it is maybe not the nicest idea to start such thing ....
I can do no harm with my entry .. it was a NOVO 1/72 Tupolew SB ... the "frames" were solid plastic .. and I could fill up my car with the amount of oil leaking from the sprues ....
cheers
Steffen

Easy, SMER Bristol Bulldog.
I bought it from a local hobby shop knowing that it was, well, inferior, by just looking at the pieces in the box. I bought it to to practise rigging a biplne. When I built it it was the worst piece of crap ever, and I started modeling in the early 1960's so I've seen my share of junk.
Afterwards, I wrote to a guy on E-bay who was trying to flog it as a unique highly detailed kit. I said he had no shame in describing it as such, he replied to me that I mind my own business.
Oh, well.

worst kit was a kitech f-117 but it was only £1.99. the plastic was just a nasty consistency. Most dissappointed in was RS Do-17. Was hyped in the mags and was expensive. A nice kit but for me at the time just starting back in the hobby was probably a bit much.
Made a half decent stab at it, but just could not make sense of the undercarriage. Built wheels up and it looks fine

I have the same Smer Bulldog as Richard mentions, molded-in markings and all, but I haven't touched it yet. I have touched however, one of my two 1:50 Reggiane Falcos. It's still in a taped together state, and I have no idea how I'm to muster the strength and patience to start it.
I'm not skilled enough for this, for a long time to come. And there are two of them. What was I thinking, buying the second.

I think this is just plain wrong or better say it is too generally spoken. Revell did some of the best kits ever made (1/48 Ju 52 comes to mind) but they sure also have some dogs in their programme .... most manufacturers have, even big T
BTW the Junkers is to be re-released soon and I hope it will come out in the "Manfred v. Richthofen" markings of Görings machine (much red parts) ... yummi

I haven't built a great deal of kits since returning to the hobby but the worst so far by miles....
Alanger Yak9T more gaps than anything I've ever seen. Ended up hating it and when one of the undercarriage legs broke during a house move I just left it. I just tell people it ground looped

Agreed. It's also worth keeping in mind the very broad range of re-releasing Revell does. IMO, the expression "Revell kit" could almost pass for a synonym for "model kit".
Their own (at least somewhat recent ones, say from the early 1990s) kits usually range from good to splendid, while the re-pops can be just about anything from ancient relics of the 50s & 60s to recent Hasegawa kits.

Hi all,
The worst kit I bought...but half expected it was the Battleaxe AlbatrosD3.... limited run very chunky.. their Focker D7 is better but still unmade ever hoping Roden step in and do one *hint hint* Not flaming or abusing Battleaxe at all just stating as I see.
Most dissapointing so far is the DML 1/35 Huey, I was so excited about this release....having bought the not to pleasant Panda offering, only to find the same kit in the box with a little photoetch thrown in....... chucked it in the loft in disgust.

Zvezda T70 (or was it T60?). First kit I ever heard of from them and was supposed to build it up for IPMS review.

I can tell a story about my Revell B-52. It was one of only three models that I have not finished. It was Huge and hard to manage and then mine had warped parts, huge gaps, and was just a beast.

Hi all,particularly Steffen,
I wasn't trying to start a row! I am not expert enough to now the history and provenance of my particular kit, but I was actually taken aback by how poor it is.
Surely we should call a dog a dog, no matter what it's pedigree!
Cheers
Steve

Without specifically rummaging through my stash, one kit comes to my mind:
Classic Airframes' 1:48 scale Fokker D.XXI, the first one. (coincidentally also the first kit by that manufacturer)
Very typical limited run of the (mid?)-90s. I bet it'll take some TLC to put together.
It looks like a D.XXI, but when compared to drawings, the shapes are just horrible.
But on the upside, at least the decal sheet, non-styrene detail parts and some of the PE look pretty nice.

I had read elsewhere how bad the kit was, but I just had to see for myself... it is a range of 1/48th F-111s.. and they are not Hobbycraft... Can you guess? (Kitech)... That is for the modern stuff, then there is the Novo old Frog kits that had more flash than parts.. and as someone else said, they leaked toxic waste....

Meikraft's 1/72 SB2U Vindicator! The trailing edges are almost as thick as the leading edges. The fuselage halves aren't the same length. However, though I gave up on in while I lived in Middletown, OH, in 1990, I still have it! Like a bad habit!
--Merlin, my sympathies! AMT's 1/48 F9F Panther is one of the few models I ever threw away
--Terri, I'd concur with you--and Steffen, and Emeritus. Many of Revell's kits are re boxed trash from 40 years ago, and some are state-of-the-art. I bet you are referring to a WW1 kit...?
--Stephen, isn't this Revell's re boxing of the Monogram kit?
--Scott, if it is 1/72, it is another "Revell"--a re box of the Monogram kit (did you get the one with 'jet noise'?). I built one wwwaaaaaayyy back when. The big box served as my model building workstation for decades. I finally (sadly) discarded it when I moved last year.
Oh yeah, the other model I never finished and wasted was a 1/35 German half track with wooden crate rocket launchers. It was a Revell / Italeri co-op. I think I have some of the horribly malformed and oversized parts around.

No .. but I think it is not really fair to separate the two for the 1990ies early 2000s time frame .. they were one company then and only the recent hard years for model manufacturers lead to several new ownerships and splits.
What really matters is where the tool is designed and cut. One of he best makers is in Korea (sadly also very expensive). Hasegawa, AM and Revell had/have some model kits designed there ... but since the economical troubles (approx. 8-10 years now) Revell has used mostly Chinese sources.
Luckily Revell is starting to leave the Chinese shop over the recent year (much of the delays is to be blaimed to them). The latest (aircraft) kits are designed by BRAZ models in Portugal and are pretty good (still not Korean level, but good) Now they have to establish a good quality control in Poland (where the kits are injection moulded) .. e.g. ehe 48 scale EF was very sloppy done .. we'll see.
cheers

I remember many, many bad fitting kits that were almost impossible to build. There was a company, I can't remember their name (1960's), that made car models. The sides of the car body were separate from the top piece, and all three pieces were warped, full of flash, with massive sprue attachments. The kit I was the most disappointed with was the Lindbergh PT boat in 1/32 scale. I was really looking forward to it when it was announced, bought it, took it home, opened the box, and returned it twenty minutes later! I exchanged it for a Tamiya Bismarck kit, which I still haven't gotten around to building, all these years later. Al

Jusst had to get involved here! The Esci 1/48 Tornado was the WORST EVER plastic kit! Big slabs of plastic for the tail, flopy folding wings, and the canopy had some sort of seperate framing that just did not work, A right bag of crap......but i finished it!

One of the worst kits in my stash is the Lindberg XF-91 Thunderceptor.
Parts don't fit that well, cockpit detail is non existent, wheel wells are just holes, you can see right through the plane to the very crude exhaust, the whole model is covered with massive raised rivet detail that the man from Trumpeter would think was overdone. And its moulded in a nice silver finish so you don't have to paint it .
It will get built though as I have started (then put back into the box) to scratch-build parts to it.
