Howdy Wingie-dudes!

I've had this kit sitting on a shelf for some time....wanting to build it but not sure if I had the time....you know how that goes. Anyhow, after seeing Nigel's post where he showed his lil' Egger, I just had to start.

This kit was bought off eBay many moons ago....it's not a Hasegawa Egg Plane, but something similar (brand unknown). The kit came in a bag with no instructions or decals. I went to the LHS and picked up a set of AeroMaster 1/72nd "Lightnings in Drab Battle Dress" decals, # 72-027. More than likely I'll just use the stars and maybe the registration numbers.

Assembly is pretty straight forward; fit is fair with some seam work to do.

As mentioned, there are no instructions, so I'm guessing about the placement of the landing gear. Should they be "inside" or "outside?" When I assembled the booms, I didn't think about this....something tells me that these parts should have been put inside prior to the boom halves being glued. Too late now. I tried to "dry fit" them inside and I honestly don't believe they would have fit. Solution? Cut 'em down as seen here:

I just recently picked up Academy's P-38F Lightning "Glacier Girl." This wannabe Egger will get the same paint job.....OD on top and Neutral Gray on the underside.

Mike

p.s. Heheheh, I did pick up Hasegawa's Corsair Egger yesterday....lil' dude will go well with my 1/48 Hase F4U-5N Corsair.

Did some more this morning. And, unfortunately realized the the landing gear bays did get put in bassackwards. I tried to remove one, but that's not happening. The only reasonable solution is to drill out a new hole, insert a short piece of aluminum tube to replicate the raised portion (not that it's really needed), and mount the landing gear the proper way. With it like it is now, the wheels would be facing inside and not out. Live and learn.

Not too many parts left nor too much more seam work. It should be ready for paint today. Masking the canopy should be, uh, interesting.

Hallo Steffen,

Vielen Dank! I know what you mean. I have a 1/48th Hasegawa Corsair, so I bought the Corsair Egger too. I also have the Eduard P-40 and went to buy the P-40 Egg last night; LHS was closed. I figure if I have a "real" model of a particular plane, I'll get the EggPlane version too. I'd give my left (blank) for Hasegawa to produce an Egg B-17G. That'd be the shiznit.

Putty is applied and just waiting for it to dry; then back to the bench.

I was looking at the decal sheet and there's one in there that has a red nose...I have a circle template, so I think once the OD and NG are on, I'll red-nose'r and do red spinners to.

so............
Somehow this is my fault???
Looks great and I hope you get over the little trails and tribulations!
I think we had 7 Eggplanes on our club stand at Milton Keynes today, and Almonkeys "scotch egg" somehow managed to escape from his sandwich box and take its place in the line
They're addictive little sods!,,I have another couple and I saw a FW190 Eggplane "What If?" today as well

Oh no Nigel, not your fault....just a motivator....Thanks! I've been wanting to build this lil' egg for some time, and that time has come. It's taking a bit longer than I thought....you know, not quite a weekend build....least by my standards!

I've got the booms on now....lots of filler and sanding. But, it's lookin' good....and I'm having fun. Right now, with other things going, it's the most important.

I primed the booms and found a couple of boo-boo's...they've been taken care of. Lots of tuning goin' on, but that's the name of the game.

The "boom wing" is just there for fit....it'll, I hope, tie into the other boom. The wheels got a coat of aluminum as I didn't have steel...tire color to follow.

Eventually I'll drill out the MG barrels...not much there to mess with as they are really petite.

Spinners: base is red at the props and the spinner tips will be Testor's Aluma Yellow

More to follow as it moves along.

Quick text update: the entire plane, sans canopy, has been primed. Found a few spots that need "attention." Once done, it's ready for paint. More to follow along with pictures.

With some filler on the booms:

Primed and ready for OD and NG:

Prop blades painted gloss black, spinners repainted Yellow, tires got their first coat of flat black...

Next up, I'm guessing is the finishing of the wheels, shoot 'er in OD, lay down the Silly Putty, shoot 'er in NG, paint the Cockpit "Cockpit Green," then install the last bits and pieces. Still debating about the decals.........

More To Follow..MTF.

That's actually quite an involved eggplane. Most are quick builds - under an hour.
You're doing well on it.

Thanks Terry...it really is pretty neat...Love the '38's!!

Scott, welllllll....knowing me, short term build usually means looooong time. However, the Egger's should be quick. I'm wondering if it's because this is not a "run of the mill" kit, or if it's just me. Dunno...but I'm enjoying it.

Some more done today. She got her first mink coat!! Well, okay...OD coat. First up shows the top covered, the props done except for the yellow tips (yellow spinners just sittin' there Oooo'ing and Ahhh'ing), and the tires/wheels with the initial paint...which has been finished quite recently.

Next up is quick; underside got the OD coat too....figured it's best to cover the "whole" with OD then, using silly putty, hit the underside with NG. For the OD, I used Model Master's rattle can. Hmmmm...kinda like this stuff. Oh, paint's freshy. And, first time ever, masked the canopy with Tamiya tape. Won't know how well that came out 'til I peal the skins.

Good evening!

Had some time this evening to do the Neutral Gray. I did indeed use the sillyputty-method, and for a first time, I think it turned out pretty darned good (thanks Red4):

Cockpit canopy turned out pretty good:

There are a couple of spots that wound up with NG overspray....more than likely I'll tape off some areas and reshoot with the rattlecan OD. The canopy will probably get some attention from the OD with a 0000 brush and the NG areas may get some tweaking too.

Once the paint is done, I'll shoot 'er with Future and apply the decals with another light coat to seal them. And for a finale, a matt clear coat.

Oh...bright yellow tips are in line for the props and still need to finish the struts/wheels/tires.

Thanks Scott...'preciate it.

I have two Model Master OD paints, one in the rattlecan and the other in a bottle. Both have the same FS #, sooooooo, taking a chance, I lightly repainted the overspray areas with the bottle OD.

I also used Zinc Chromate on the "inner" side of the nose gear's "door." The yellow tips on the props are currently drying, but I'm sure I'll need to do some fine tuning there. Wheels, tires, and struts are done....just need to be attached.

The last "real" painting left to do are the mufflers/exhaust (?) on top of the boom/wing area. I now wish I had left them off. Ach, live and learn! Speaking of which, what color should they be? And I'm thinking not in a weathered/worn state....steel?

Hi Terri,

I have the Corsair and plan to get the P-40, so yep, there will be more. This little bugger "taught me a few lessons" the annoying way. I expect the Corsair will be better in terms of the build and quality (of the kit and the build).

Fantastic!
These eggplanes are so much fun you wouldnt believe.
Its just so refreshing to build something without having to wade through mountains of references etc.
Great fun!
We ought to have an eggplanes thread for people to post theirs onto?

I agree Nige. Up until I saw yours a bit ago, I haven't seen any posted here. I honestly didn't think members would take it serious....mostly because it isn't a "serious" subject. Fun? Oh heck yea...and for someone that doesn't normally do birdies, this lil' Egger has given me an understanding of some of the things I'll run into when I (someday) begin my fully loaded 1/48th B-17G.

If you can get a thread for eggplanes, I'll take a couple "studio" shots of this one for it.
