I can remember a long time ago building an ME-109. On a recent trip to my favorite hobby shop I looked for this plane. No ME-109's - now it seems this designation is gone and this plane is identified as a Bf-109. Why? When did this happen? Have I been building armor too long?
Thanks.

The correct terminology is Bf.

Messerchmitt designed aircraft for the company called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bf), - my German is nicht ser gut but I think Bavarian Aircraft Factory would be a close translation.

I too remember the 109 being called Me109 but I think that was the popular press. Certainly all the specialist publications I have from the fifties on refer to the aircraft by its correct title.

Dave, thanks for the clear explain, I too often wonder this question.

I have one further question, but for ME262, how come it's always refer to ME262 rather than BF262, is this because ME262 was not designed for the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke ?

OOOOH OOOHH PICK ME PICK ME

Actually, the 262 was designed after Bayerische Flugzeugwerke well and truly became Messerschmitt AG amd Dr. Messerschmitt was given recognition for his influence on the designs coming from his own design bureau, thus the Me designation.

It's kind of like when you see the Focke-Wulf Ta 152 or Ta 183 - both designated in recognition of designer Kurt Tank.

That's why you usually say Messerschmitt Bf109...
