Have a look at this image.
The panel below the squadron emblem carrying the pilot/crew names is darker than the surrounding area.
This aircraft appears in my father's log book as his "personal" aircraft shortly before this picture was taken. It seems logical that some other names were painted out with a fresh coat of EDSG before the application of his name.
This would imply that the rest of the upper surface colour is somewhat faded to a lighter hue.
