How do you paint these things ? I have a 1/48 AH-64 and the eduards etch set.

The lens on the device is a metallic blue so something that give you that effect should work. Tamiya X-13 Metallic Blue Acrylic should come real close.

It can also appear as metallic red, gold, violet, etc. I paint them the same as I do with laser coated optics on vehicles. First I put down a coat of silver, then overcoat with clear red, then another coat of clear amber, with a little gold mixed in. You can also substitute clear blue as opposed to the red. Also, you can vary different squares or sides to give it the effect of sunlight hitting from one side or the other. It comes out nicely. Good luck.

I cheated,on my Revell 1/32nd scale beastie i left it bare as the raw copper seemed like a good match to photos i`ve seen

Here's one method that I tried and I like it, although it isn't perfect...
I use the 1/35 M113 vision blocks from Echelon cut to size. I used them on a 1/72 ALQ-144, but I'm pretty sure its applicable to 48th...
