HI, I've seen some WW1 kits in 1/48 scale from a company called SMER for sale online. They seem reasonabley priced but I've never seen any kits from this company so I wondered if anyone here has built or seen any of their aircraft kits? Any comments on the quality and detail?

I've built a 1/48 Smer Albatros DIII and was not impressed at all. Recently I ordered a 1/48 Smer Tiger Moth- and literally sent it back for credit because I was not impressed at all.
As I remember from the DIII- fit problems, lack of detail in areas, overdetailing in other areas -i.e. a molded Balkencross on the upper wing surface, wing ribs over-exaggerated.
Personally, I have no problem spending 2 or 3 times the price for a different companies model. Not sure if Smer makes an Albatros DV- but even if they did, I'll still only buy an Eduard DV.

Also- I don't have the patience to totally rework a poor kit. I like to at least have a good foundation to work with and detail from there. This is why I'll lean toward Tamiya kits- good to start with, and I can superdetail all I want.

You guys should look at their 1:72 kits and those of MPM. I had a pair of Spitfires (mk Xviii and Pr mk XIX) now the mouldings weren't on a par with the likes of Dragon etc but in the Boxes were resin props, vacform canopies, and small etched brass detail frets.All this for not much more than your average Airfix kit.I thought they were quite reasonable.

All the SMER kits I know are reboxings of very very very old molds... these are the models my granddad used to build ! Well, I'm maybe exagerating a bit... but you've got the idea.

For 1/72 scale, I know SMER reboxes many of the old Heller kits, with new decals. They have others (I don't know if they are their own original molds) that include resin bits and look quite nice.

I would get the SMER Walrus flying boat. Its cheap and is relativly easy.
