Hi guy’s,

I am a armour modeller that wants to leave his comfort zone and try and do something new.

I want to make an Iraqi Hawker Hunter. I am going to use the Revell kit and aftermarket decals.

But I have a question about the colour of the Hunter.

Am I correct in assuming ( Yes I know what they say about assuming ) that the colour for the lower fuselage and underside of the wings is painted in a silver colour? I read somewhere that that part of the aircraft was painted in that colour by the factory.
But on the pallets I have of Iraqi Hunters it looks white.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks for any information you can give me,

I'd actually guess light gray, but it could be silver. I think it was light gray on the later/rebuilt hunters though...

I can confirm with my references at home later tonight.

I did see some photos on Primeportal of Hunters with white/gray undersides but those where museum airecraft so I it could be that they where repainted that way, or (more likely) I am wrong on the silver part

But convermation would be great in this case.

Thanks Vance

Hi again Jan,

Toss up on the hunter scheme for Iraq.

Seems they got some Mk 6s in the 50s, and these are likely to have had the silver undersides.

Later they recieved some Mk 59s, and these definitely would have the light gray undersides.

Starting from the late 60s the Hunter scheme (and RAF in general) was Dark Sea Grey, Dark Green and Light Grey (equivalent of Lt Gull Grey). Rebuilt hunters (mk 59s) for export would have certainly had this scheme. the Mk 6s on the other hand... maybe (probably?) silver undersides.

So I guess it depends on which mark and time period you want to do.

I want to do one from the the six day war 1967 or from during the Yom kippur war 1973.
this is what information I have:

1957 Iraq bought 15 Mk6 from the UK
1964 24 Ex belgian and Dutch Mk6 converted to Mk 59
1965-1967 18 Ex belgian and Dutch Mk6 converted to Mk 59
1966 4 ex Dutch converted to Mk 59

But another question. what is the difference between a Mk6 and a Mk59? Does it require a lot of changes? The gray of the Mk59 is more appealing than the silver of the Mk6

Thanks for the help Vance

The 59 was the equivalent to the FGA.9, which had the housing, for the braking parachute, aft of the t/e of the rudder. The F.6 didn't have that housing.
