I'm looking for a nice kit of a P38 in 1/72 as I think it's the only major USAAF fighter I don't have a kit of (I'm not counting the P61!). I've been looking at the Academy and Revell kits. I know Academy are generally nice kits to build and have reasonable detail but what about the Revell kit? I thought it might be the old Matchbox kit reborn but I was in a model shop today and I looked at the box and it seems to have things like a detailed gun bay for example. Can anyone comment on either the Academy or Revell kit or is there any reviews of these kits? I would love an idea before spending my money on either!

thanks
Mike

Hi Michael

Well, 72 is not my scale so take my comment with some hesitation. I just had this discussion because i published the rereleased Revell kit on my site.

It is their own pretty old tool. I built one 20 years ago (or so) and I found the detail quite nice. I was told the Academy is the benchmark now but the Revell kit can be built into a nice model

Revell P-38L Lightning by Dieter Wiegmann (he builds the a/c Testshots for Revell)

all the best

I built a Dragon P-38 last year.
Very enjoyable build.
Heres an INBOX REVIEW
And the finished model. OOB apart from Aries machine guns.
