Hello, folks!
I usually make ship models and only occasionally venture into building aeroplanes.
While doing a bit of off-topic reading I stumbled across the FW189 Uhu.
I do have a strong linking for odd birds and I want to build one of these in either 72nd or preferrably in quarterscale.
Now which choices of kits are available? (plastic, resin, short run, no matter what)
Which would be THE reference (book or online) I should draw to accompany my build? Certainly I would like to have an accurate plan or line drawing at hand for this project.
I looking forward to your replies!
TIA
Cheers,
Guido

Hi Guido
Firstly, welcome to Aeroscale! It's great to have you aboard.
All my reference books are packed up at the moment, ready to move home, so I can't access them - but one that I haven't got, which looks well worth tracking down is this:
http://www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de/EHomepage/BookReview/bookreview.html
I'm almost sure it has more photos and info than anything that was on my bookshelves.
I'm looking forward to seeing your build, because it's a subject I've always wanted to tackle myself (albeit in 1:48).
All the best
Rowan

Airfix made a 1/72 scale kit of it - many years ago and probably long out of production. I think MPM and Italeri have also kitted it

Good to hear from you Guido! I remember meeting you at the last two IMPS shows in Telford. The display you guys brought from Germany was excellent last year. i hope you'll be bringing something good this year too. Speaking of the Airfix FW189, I also remember that kit from when I was a kid. Never got it though. Just a thought though, you might find one lurking at a stall at Telford. As I'm sure you already know, you can get all sorts of old kits there!
thanks
Mike

Hallo Guido
Fw 189A-1 Revell
Focke Wulf Fw 189A-1 "Night Fighter" MPM
Steffen

Is that Revell FW189 a new tooling kit? It doesn't look too bad. I should really learn more German as i can only pick out a few words in that review!
thanks

I am sorry Michael!
The Revell is a re-boxing of the MPM kit, but it has some small improvements and is probably a bit cheaper and easier to get in Germany.
all the best
Steffen

..I didn't realise that until I read this thread...IIRC MPM also did the armoured ground attack variant which was a strange looking bird....
If you're looking for online refs try the luftwaffe-experten web site. Detail drawings from the type handbook are at this thread (cut & paste into your browser)

Gentlemen!
Thank you very much for your quick and plentyful replies!
While it seems a bit difficult to acquire the quarterscale MPM kit the 72nd MPM and Revell offerings are out there. I'll be looking around for a 48th scale kit before jumping in on 72nd.
Thank you for the tips on the book: I have duely ordered it already (One can not have too many books!)
Again the kitmaker networks prooves a most valubale source!
I have signed up on the Experten-Forum. Lets see what these guys have to say.
@Mike MX
Nice to hear from you again!
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this year. As well, the Gamblers can make it only every other year, due to the high cost of hauling and housing a whole team of modellers and display over a distance of 1000km and the channel in between. The advantage is that within a 2-year rythm there won't be anything old on the stand: My club displays a full range of new models every time we are around. So, be on the lookout for us in 2010!
Cheers,
Guido

Guido - No worries there, I can understand that! I'll look forward to seeing what goodies you bring next year! If you're their this year, just visiting and i see you, i'll say hi anyway.
Steffen - thanks for that. I'm not looking for the FW189 in particular but it's always good to know about good kits for future reference. Are you quite knowledgeable about Revell kits? I was wondering if their ME109 G10 was any good in 1/72
thanks

MPM's 1/48 Fw 189s are out of production - of course, they would be. The one that appears most often on eBay is the 189B (the staff transport version). I've never seen a 189C. Recently a 189A went for something in the region of £60 - so good luck!
