It looks like many people are systematically using primer. I am not.
What primer are you people using?
and why? I never had any problem without primer (but i do wash the plastic with a mild soap before airbrushing
and can you use any final paint on top of a primer?

I always use primer, no matter the subject or the material, even if I'm preshading. My preferred primer is Tamiya Extra Fine, either white or light grey depending on the eventual basecoat - however the majority of the time it's the light grey.

Hi all
I have to admit, I'm surprised just how many people have answered that they always prime their kits with "proper" primer paint. I'm definitely a slacker - I grab any suitable paint that's at hand (or whatever's in the airbrush) and often just spray over the seams to check for problems.
That said, maybe I'm a bit more thorough with acrylics - I'd normally give them a base of matt enamel (again though, anything close to the final colour) for a more robust finish...
All the best

I don't use primer all that much , just depends on the colour of the plastic in the kit . If it's light the base coat act's as a primer . When the plastic is dark then yes I will prime but I use flat white for that or a light grey .

I prime all the time. The primer of choice is Tamiya's Fine gray.

Never once in my life in modeling have I ever used primer. Always had great results without it and to me it seems like a waste of paint and money.

I always prime , but not only one modelling brand, but lots . (sorry for my English )
I use primarily grey (every brand I don't care) http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/images/TAM87042.jpg (example)
And Mr. Hobby (ex gunze) Mr Base (liquid putty but in spray can!) http://www.hobbywave.com/images/hobby_2686_pmr_base_white_is_useful_for_making_a_black_red_or_other_darkcolored_surface_whitep.jpg

Always Halfords plastic primer, grey or white depending what colours are going on top. I only spray acrylics now and wasn't a" primer" when I used enamels. I often read of people having problems with acrylics being fragile or lifting with masking, thankfully hardly ever happens with the use of a primer.
