When looking at the color scheme proposed for this kit, Revell/Monogram is calling out this night fighter to have RLM02 Grey underside and RLM02 /RLM 74 GrayGreen camo on top....

This seems odd, cause the box pictures does not match (painted traditional RLM70/71)...Could this be an error in the instructions?, or was this scheme used for night fighters?

Hi propboy

I haven't got the Promodeller kit, but that does sound an unusual scheme... of course it might have been applied at unit level.

According to Luftwaffe Colours by Michael Ullman, standard schemes for nightfighters were as follows:

Start of the war: RLM 70 and 71 topsides - RLM 65 undersides (as per day scheme).

1941- end 1942: RLM 22 (Black) topsides, RLM 65 undersides or RLM 22 overall.

End 1942 -end 1944: RLM 76 overall, RLM 75 mottling on topsides (this varied widely in form). Sometimes the topsides were solid colour, and sometimes the undersides were painted black, sometimes just one wing (usually starboard).

End 1944 onwards RLM81,82 & 83 began to be used for uppersides.

As you can see, there was a lot of variation... best bet is always to try to find a reference photo for the particuar aircraft you want to model.

If can you post any details of the aircraft - unit, date etc., maybe someone has a picture to confirm the scheme... :-)

Hope this helps

Rowan

I am doing the famous Hptm. Helmut Lent when he flew a JU 88 C-6 4./NJG2, 1942, Holland.
Specifically calling out Grey RLM02 top and bottom with the top side camo'd using RLM74 Dark Grey and Black Green RLM70,propellers and spinner.

Hi Propboy

I haven't found any pics of Lent's Ju88, but a couple of shots of NJG2 a/c show what could be Grau 02 topsides with a dark (74 or 75?) mottle. Both have a pale underside - RLM 65?. One still has it's nacelles and cowls uppers painted RLM 70/71.

Sorry if this only confuses things more...! Can anyone else help?

All the best
