As I see a bit of interest in the civilian campaign proposal, how how about a racers and speed record attempt aircraft campaign. Similar to the Need for Speed campaign, but with a few important differences.
Any aircraft allowed, as long as it is built in the configuration in which it was designed to attempt a speed record, or take part in an air race. Doesn't even have to have taken part in a race or record attempt, or even have been completed. Converted fighters, etc. are fine, as long as they are built in the configuration and painted for a race or record attempt.
I guess there are plenty of opportunities across eras.
Some aircraft I might be interested in building:
Napier's Heston Type 5
Bugatti P100 (though it is not available in 1/72)
DH88 Comet (Heritage resin 1/72?)
Any Schneider Cup biplane

Look out bent throttles for more inspiration.

I might have to drop projects. But I'm a sucker for pretty schemes.
Endurance records ok too? Spirit of St Louis say?

Hi Ben
Sounds fun! I'm thinking of building Planet Models' Hughes H-1 for the civilian campaign if that get the go ahead. Maybe this would be the excuse I need to finally chase down one of the High Planes Reno racers.
All the best

Hi Ben
Wow what a topic. I am in, although I have no idea of what to build! I have just looked at airspeed records on wilkepedia and the short list of aircraft they list is inspiring.

I know a lot of this ground has been covered in the Speed campaign that only ended in June, but I liked the idea of aircraft that were designed to push the boundaries of what was achievable.
I think including J-P's idea of endurance records is good.
Maybe the definition could be that it had to be designed primarily to break a record or take part in a race. So lots of aircraft that happened to be fast, or have great endurance, would be excluded, if they had another primary design goal, e.g. SR-71. Although there would be some flexibility, if they were following in the spirit of the campaign of pushing boundaries, e.g. using a aircraft not designed for the challenge, but the person was pushing the boundaries by using it for such an attempt. Or anything heavily adapted for the goal, e.g. Reno racers.

What about the heavyweight lifters, Antonovs and such, would we include a payload section?
