at the recent scale model world show at telford i like nothing more than rummaging through the traders stands in search of classic kits, i managed to pick this up for the princely sum of £2, its original price being 3/6. after building another frog kit that had the little pics of other kits on the side of the box (this mustang being one of them) the subliminal advertising worked, and at less than the price of a pint, i snapped it up
while fitting the wings i managed to snap off a propellor blade
the heavy rivet detail and panel lines will all be re-scribed and toned down
and after, much better!
pilot in his office, strapped in with extra safe tamiya tape!
a final fettle ready for a fairly involved paint job, haven't done invasion stripes on a kit for probably 15 years!

Reduce, reuse, recycle.
You are so mean are you sure you have no aberdonian blood in you
Perhaps just yorkshire.
2 quid for a pint? You should get down the Legion for a cheap swally.
Those rivets look more like toilet rolls stuck the the side of the fuselage.
How is the profile shape? Looks like a mustang from here. Considering this
is so much more work and skill than building a tamiya or hasegawa i'll follow this.
Keep her lit.

Takes me back ....built one of these when I was very much younger than I am now

had to put this on hold for a little while as i'd run out of the green paint i was goin to use!
however i noticed that the tail gear doors are somewhat over thick, so i thinned them down
then it was on to the stripes....
i've found the simplest way to do these is to spray on the white first
then use tape to get the actual stripe, by carefully taping across the whole of the white panel to get the lines parallel to each other-
then remove the strips that will be done black, and you end up with a pretty neat result!-
i've got a rare day off work today and have the paints for the upper surfacesso, there might be another little update before tomorrow!

famous last words part 267-
"i've got a rare day off work today and have the paints for the upper surfacesso, there might be another little update before tomorrow!"
in the excitement of getting the top colours on i forgot to post any pics of that happening!
what i did was to use good ol' blutac to get the wavy line of the humbrol 163 green, after i painted the uppers completely in humbrol 27. the underside i finished in H 64.
it just needs a final touch up, transfers going on, then i can have a play with some of the pro modellers washes i have.
(and i know i've forgot to put any green on the rudder/fin! i'll get it when i touch up!)

good tip for masking the stripes. I made a bit of a meak of my Hunhunter with
stripes. I think I'll try your method for the suez stripes on my wyvern. Thanks
for sharing that.

I had one of these ponies way back when, this takes me back. Nice work on a venerable old kit.

well i've been off the air for a while due to xmas then some computer issues plus a change of internet provider. however...
this left me with a fair bit of time for modelling!
i had a little bit of a problem with one of the decals, that i put in water then forgot about! it had been soaking for about 3 hours and when i tried to use it it, it curled up into a little tube and no amount of persuasion with micro sol would make it uncurl. so i had a bright idea of painting over an old decal in the same colour, then cutting out a letter N (glad it wasn't S or G!) which worked out fine-
and here is the finished kit, this side is the N decal i replaced, i have to say all the other kit decals went on a treat, it just seems they don't like being left in water for 3 hours!
