There's a guy advertising a new paint and pigment line over in the Painting forum on Armorama. His focus is on Armor paints right now but I encourage you guys to look over at the stuff and maybe start talking him into making some airplane colors. He's open to suggestions and will even mix custom colors for you if you buy a pint.

The paint I tested is good. Works in my Aztek airbrush unthinned, covers well, and brush paints nicely too. And it's inexpensive.
Pigments are nice too. They are WAY cheaper than, say, Mig products.

Give it a look.

Link to Armorama post is here

Just FYI - I'm not part of the company but I was one of his testers for the paint and pigments.

Hi Scott

Thanks for the heads-up - they look very interesting indeed! Hmmm - aircraft colours, that would be rather good if we could talk Brian into it ...

All the best

Of course you can "talk me into it"! LOL

Scott was one of the "testers" for my paints in the Armorama Forum.

I build planes too..just currently my focus is on armor models so I started there.
For the armor models I started with three basic colors. A German Dark Yellow, a Forrest Green and a Red Brown.

After the first of the year I will have three more colors slanted towards armor models, Olive Drab, Track Brown and Panzer Gray but have no problem mixing up a batch of colors for some aircraft modelers to try.

Lets start this thread and you folks agree on three colors to start with and I will make them. Three of the most often used and wanted colors.

The current Forest Green and Red/Brown might be ok to start with..just whatever you folks think.

Here's the deal:

Paints are 11.50 USD$ a bottle but they are packaged in 2 fluid ounce bottles. We are talking usually four times as much as paints are usually packaged sometimes more than that.

I sale sets of three at 10.00 USD$ each. The three can be any color, mix and match. 3.50 shipping in the US and around 13.00 International for up to six bottles.

Powdered Pigments are also available. The colors are Rust, Soot Black, Concrete Gray, Dirt Brown, Earth,Ash White and Sand/Dust.

They are 5.50 $USD a bottle or a set of five for 20.00. Again 3.50 shipping US.

If someone wants to test and review a sample of paint I could probably scratch up a sample but that is about it until after the Holidays.

Just PM me that you would like a sample for testing/review. First come, First serve.

And give me some suggestions for a few aircraft colors. I will get them on the list to crank out after the first of the year.

Thanks folks!

Hai Brian,

This looks very interesting and I wish you all the success possible! Although I am far from a specialist I have always been very interested in color.

You might do yourself a favor by "translating" your US terminology for the potential international customer. Until I noticed the US flag in your mail I had no idea wheter "5.50 a bottle" meant 5.50 dollar, euro, pound or any other currency.

Also, what is an ounce? I can google it of course but customers may find it easier that you give the comparison between ounce and liter (milliliter).

Do you have any idea of the shelf life of the paint and whether the color is changing over time?

Is this enamel or acryl? It could become important to have a clear view if we can mix your paint with other brands or whether we should avoid using certain other paints, washes or varnishes on top of your paint.

Further, what exchange rate would you use between US dollar and Euro. The daily rate on the day the sale is made, or a fixed rate? I have some very bad experience with UK magazine producers who are still thinking that 1 pound is worth 2 euro.

I can not imagine that the Germans were referring to their paints as "German Dark Yellow" or something like that. Such descriptive name sounds but does not give very much info. Is it possible to use the federal standard numbering codes to describe your paints, or is this too limited?

Do you have a website? Or would kitmaker start up a "kitmaker producer" sub site?

My apologies if you have already replied to these questions but i have not read everything written on this topic

good luck and an exciting 2010

Hello DrabSlab,

I will certainly clarify any questions that may be brought up. I apologize for my oversight and thanks for the input!

The money values are in U S dollars. Most people out of the US have paid me through pay-pal and I believe they handle the exchange rates? If another payment method is desired we can work something out.

An "ounce" is a unit of measure we people here in the US still use..quite behind the times I must agree, that measures volume or weight. Here I am talking about two ounces by liquid volume. This equals 59.15 Mililiters.

The paint is what I call a "hybrid". It has properties of both acrylics and enamels. It is water based and can be mixed with any other water based acrylic paint. But once dry you need to apply a clear coat over it such as Testor Dullcoat so that other waterbased paints will adhere to it. DOA paints and oil based paints can be sprayed over a DOA base with no varnish applied. The DOA paint can be sprayed striaght out of the bottle without thinning. This was one of my requirments.

The shelf life is 36 months.

I'll work on Federal Standards but have never been a real stickler for them.

Basically I have named the paints for what I believe their intended, general use would be..such as German Dark Yellow..to be the base coat for German vehicles after 1943. German Dark Yellow could also be called "Panzer DunkerGelb 1943". Of course I am open to any suggestions.

I have basically three goals in this endeavor. To provide the modeler a quality product at a very reasonable price. Broken down, this paint (and the pigments) are much less expensive per "ounce" or milliliter than any other on the market. To provide the modeler a product in larger quantities. The "two ounce" or 59.15 milliliter is what I package the paint and pigments in. Then again, a larger quantity than any other paint I have found on the market. This reduces the cost of the product and keeps the customer from having to run back and forth to the hobby shop so often burning up gas/petrol/fuel and time.

Pints and quarts will also be available. again US measurements by volume. A pint being 473 ml and a quart being two pints..946.4 ml.

The third goal is to give the customer a "say so" in the product. In the armorama forum the folks wanted an old humbrol track color that is no longer available. I mixed up a sample..let them decide on a name and now "Track Brown" is on the way!

I can custom mix any color under the rainbow..(with the exception of metallics but these will be coming soon as well..) So customers can have custom mixed colors available to them.

I am sorry this is kinda long but I wanted to answer your questions as throughly as possible.

Oh yea...and my web site is...http://blmoore.com

Thanks and let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
I would love to hear from you aircraft guys on some colors you are looking for!

Hi Brian

I'd certainly be keen on trying out your new paints once the craziness of Christmas and New Year is behind us. I'm sure we can come up with some popular aircraft colours that would make good economic sense for you to produce.

All the best

Sounds good Rowan.
After the first I will put up a new post..with more information...then we will be ready to crank up full production.

Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year!
Looking forward to a great 2010.

I'll put my hand up with a couple of suggestions.

Olive Drab and Neutral Grey for my growing Thunderbolt collection, and a good "scale black" would be great for my stash of night fighters. At the moment I use a 50/50 mix of Tamiya Flat Black and Red Brown, but a standard pre-mixed version would be GREAT !!

Cheers and best of luck with your venture. I will certainly be giving them a go once you are up and running.

Sure Damian,

I have an Olive Drab on the list and will be ready by the end of next week. So you want a color..we will call "scale black"..50% black with 50% red brown. The red/brown I already have available so I will just throw that in with some black and post a picture. See if it is what you are looking for.

Thanks!

I occasionally delve into the darkside of modeling, good old 1970s muscle cars. You have my attention. So, could you do sassy green, plum crazy, hemi orange, etc.?

I can give it a shot.
I just need a mixing ratio or a sample..even a picture would get me started...

This is very interesting indeed. Luftwaffe colors are always best sellers. Do you have Ken Merrick's Books (two volumes) about the subject? It has some very good paint ships included.

If you don't have it I can mix up the most important RLM colors with my Tamiya paints using the chart as a reference and send you a color samples page.

Will you have the possibility to do metallic colors?

Hi Brian! Looks like you have a winning endeavor going on.Congrats and best of luck!
My one question so far concerns color fastness/fading. Are your H2O based colors on a par with other established lines? I have no knowledge of what that number or factor is but would not want my camo job to fade to gray-white,yellowing, or chalk up and fall off the surfaces after 3 years or so.
My one suggestion/request so far is a set of 3 French armor camo, early WW2. I do not have samples, names, or numbers for them but I imagine they are somewhere along the lines of German theory. It's possible the same colors were applied to their aircraft of the time. Others would know more I'm sure.
I know I'm not the only one around here that has multiple French armor kits in their stash and I could go through a set of colors just on what I already have. Not ready for it now and willing to wait.
Cheers for a new palette!

Hi Rick,

I have no concerns about the paint fading, yellowing or chalking up and falling off.
This stuff is rock solid. I had an expert on paint help me engineer the stuff and we put it through all kinds of abuse. You could paint your car with the it.

As to colors..Well, I promised some folks a line of Luftwaffe colors next...(I will be picking that book up soon Jean-Luc)also some Israeli colors..then I will go to work on some general allied air colors.

I will post up an update in the next week or so.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
I really appreciate it.
