B-17 in 1/48 still not that large. B-29 may be too large in 1/48. Many of the 1/72 aircraft that have been produced in the last few years have excellent detail and readily available PE sets. Alas, my eyesight is fast moving beyond any magnified help. So I leave the small stuff to you younger guys and enjoy my beer. Good luck on your quest.

Academy can help you with the B-17 and a very nice B-29. Hasegawa though an older kit also have a nice B-17. All in 1/72nd scale if space is an issue. In 1/48th you have Revell-Monogram on the B-17 and B-29. The B-29 in 48th is quite large.
Airfix also has a B-29 in 72nd scale, I do not recall how it is so I will not comment on it good or bad.

I could only agree with Chuck and Capnjock - scale 1:72 B-29 - best from Academy - many details, nice decals - many versions ( B-29,KB-29.. and even B-50 and RB-50 ) - don't buy Airfix - I had one - It's the worst model I had so take advice and look for Academy ,
about B-17 also - Academy have many of wariants of this Bomber - but they are not so detail as B-29 - I think if You like PE or resin stuff it could be Your SHOW - Academy products have engraved panel lines oposite to Hasegawa - nice model but old sprues .
I hope We could help to make a choice

I am a huge fan of aircraft in 1/48 scale. Personally if you have room even to hang it from the ceiling - I'd go 1/48 over 1/72.
The B-24 is about 20" across and is big. The B-17 is quite large too.
So, if room is a concern and detail is what yo want you might want to go with the higher end kits.
