Thanks Terri. This looks like a fun little build. I'm going to go through it step by step and keep it OOB and I'll stick pretty much with the kit instructions on how to paint the parts.

Here is the first step of the build.

I've painted the cockpit interior and picked out some detail with silver and a dark wash.

The fuselage went together well with no fit problems. There are two parts for the engine.

Engine Front and Back.............

The cowling has a raised edge around the outer lip and it is connected there on two sides to the sprue.

With a little careful cutting you can remove the srue nub and retain the edge.

The control cables for the elevator go trough the horizontal stabilizers on the tail. I drilled them out with a small drill bit then cleaned them up with a knife and small file.

The next set of instructions call for the tail, lower wing, engine, cowling and guns to be installed. I also drilled out the control cable holes in the fuselage.

I'll need to do some painting before I put any more together. There is a part to insert into the center of the top wing.

Everything fits great so far. That's it for now.

More soon,

Mark

Very nice painting Mark . Colours look good . How did you find the fit off the lower wing .
My was a very tight fit , which isn't a bad thing - this will make a very strong join .

Question though , Is Eduards profile for the painting correct ? Wasn't the rear wing also having a top coat of camo ?

Terri,

You could be right, I'm not sure. I don't have many references for the Nieuports. The only photograph of the aircraft I have comes from "French Aircraft of WW1"......

As you can see, there is no way to tell. Perhaps someone out there has a better picture or reference they could post here. Please feel free. I'm happy to have all the help I can get.

Here is a bit of fun on the subject of Nieuport types. I believe that Guynemer was assigned 1530 & 1531?

Terri,

Hi Terri,

I just got my paint in for the rest of the build this week. I ran out of brown for the upper wing and I didn't want to use a different color. I have enough paint now and in my soon to arrive backorder to keep me in paint for a while.

Howdy,

There is an excellent article in the "Wind-Sock Special 20th Anniversary Edition! (1985-2005)"
concerning the 1/72 Revell Nieuport 17 and this particular mount of Guynemeyer. It shows two views from the rear including the uncamo'd tail. It also makes the argument that maybe the upper surfaces of the wings were CDL outlined in white. Well worth getting.

Thanks for the heads up on that article, Brian.

Here is the top wing painted and wing rigging and undercarriage rigging finished. I'll need to retouch the paint where the rigging lines come out of the top of the wing. I also got the rudder decaled.

Thanks Stephen for the list of ref's to look for . I just pick up the new Over the Front , the spotted cow camo is kinda cool !

Hi everyone,

Here are the final build pictures for the Nieuport. A virus killed my home computer and I lost the build pictures. Questions are welcomed.

Very well done Mark !

Do you feel that the alum dope is to bright ? Would adding a lttle grey into would bring it into a more scale apperance ?

I look forward to your next little project

Great work, Mark. I really enjoyed following this build/review. I find these 1/72 bi-planes to be pesky beasts to tame, but...you make it look almost easy.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike, you're right, they can be a little tricky if you are not used to the scale (like me).

Terri, thanks, the silver turned out a little more "silver" than I wanted. I usually add Dullcote to the silver and it makes it a little more grey in appearance. I forgot to add it to the paint this time.

Nice little build there. I have this in 1/48th. After working on these 1/32nd kits 1/48 looks tiny! I have yet to break spru on an Eduard kit and I have a stash worth of them. 1/72nd is way to small for these eyes. Good job, I like it.
