How similar in general appearance are these types. I love the long nosed E Phantom. Saw a Testor's kit of an F / G Wild weasel and wondered if they looked alike aircraft wise.

The F-4F is a downgraded version of the E for the Luftwaffe. The external differences are minor - the biggest is, if memory serves, not having a refuelling receptacle on the spine. The F-4F couldn't use the AIM-7 but the wells in the underside were left open. Really, the biggest difference is the paintwork.

The F-4G (the Wild Weasel one, that is) was developed from the F-4E by stuffing an enormous locating and targeting system into the airframe. The main external differences are a tubular fairing (pointed at the front) on top of the fin and the replacement of the gun with another fairing that's slightly longer and squarer than the gun fairing. Both were included to carry antennae for the targeting system. Another important difference in appearance is of course the armament - all USAF F-4Es could carry the AGM-45 and AGM-78 in theory, but only the F-4G did it routinely, and in its later life it also spent a lot of time carrying and firing the AGM-88. Many F-4Es were fitted with TISEO sensors on the port wing; no F-4G had them.

So, actually, fairly similar in general appearance, but important differences in detail.

There's a lot of very useful information here, which is one of probably millions of sites that talks at length about the Phantom: http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=148643.

Didn't the F also have unslotted tailplanes?
