I just finished weathering the under side and the rest of the parts fixed in place . Another seal of dull coat has been added to lock in the pastels . Will have pic's up later tonight .
Only thing left to do is paint the canopy frames which I will paint by hand this time , which I should have done in the first place .
See you later

Thanks Mark , very much appreciated
Here are the pic's of the weathered under side . Again no wash was used . This was all done with pastels Different shades of Tamyia's line and Grumbacher . I do recommend using Tamyia's Pastels , they are easy to work with and can be used with water for even more effects .
Still need to do some clean up on the glass and a wash needs to go the landing gear .
Next comes the canopy

I'm with Mark, Terri. Nice recovery. If it were me I probably would have taken out my hammer and given it a "Factory Adjustment" and that would have been the end of it

You managed to turn it into a battle worn look.

Superb Terri, this shows what can be achieved with a bit of patience and persistence, and a bucketload of talent ( I have precious little of any !! )
Did any of your birthday wishes come through??
Cheers, D

Hi Terri
Wow! How did I miss all the drama of the Decals Disaster?!? Great recovery work though to turn it into heavy weathering.
What dull coat did you use? It would definitely be worth testing it on a spare decal to see if it happens again - you could save a lot of people a lot of heartache in future.
All the best

Thank-you Shawn , Mark , David , Damian , Rowan and Nick for the comments .
Rowan , this is the part which puzzles me . I have used the same method for years . Coat of future , when dry then the decals . After this is dried I wash the model let dry and then the dull coat . I use Testors dull coat in the rattle can . Only the top national markings on the wing and tail decals survived . The rest turned into old man weatherspoon . I will try some of the left over decals on a scrap project and see if the results are the same and will post the results .
Nick , nothing will be done with the decals , this is why the aircraft is heavily weathered . I used the results of the decal mishap and used it as an advantage rather then a disadvantage .

If it's going to be nothing with the decals it should be something in the color
It's strange to see the markings destroyed and the color clean
Chipping
Cheers Nick

Hi Terri
I've never used Testors dull coat (it hasn't been available over here) but from what I've just read on the web, it is a pretty "hot" varnish. I can only imagine that a solvent in it attacked the decals, and the ones that survived were where the varnish was misted on lighter and didn't have a chance to damage them before it dried.
All the best

I personally always put another coat of future over the decals before any weathering or dull coat that way the decals are protected from any possible future damage. Maybe doing a test of with and without future to see what happens?

You can get it in the UK. A firm called Horsing Around, who deal with model horses, sell it. I met the owners a couple of years ago when Sam got into the model horse hobby and I found them trading at one of the shows.
Link to Item They are out of stock of the rattle cans at the moment but after Sam spoke to them last week they are hoping to get some back in stock soon.

Cheers Allen
I haven't seen any Testors paints in the UK for years until Creative Models started importing them recently. I must admit I wouldn't fancy using an aerosol for the final coat on a model (I've had enough disasters with primer! LOL!) and I'm happy with Windsor & Newton Galeria acrylic matt varnish - it gives a lovely finish and (touch wood) I've never had a mishap with it.

Hi Rowan , Yes it is " hot " , but I have been using this product for 20 years now and never had this happen . It is a great product and has a nice scheme it . Not to flat . I'm guessing you are right on a chem/reaction .
Allen , thanks for the feed back . I did seal the decals after they were dried . two coats . I always seal them after being applied with long drying periods in between before the dull coat goe's on .
I will try the left overs one sealed with two coats of future and one with out and see what happens .

Great job, Terri. It looks great. It was interesting to follow your project.
The Zvesda kits have different quality in them and interesting to see that this might be one for the stash.

Terri,
I agree. You slayed that dragon, put it's head on a pike then went home and had hot chocolate.
Awesome work.
