Hi Jim

It stand right there "Ekranoplan "Lun" Project 903". It is a ground effect craft of Soviet Black Sea fleet.

Old/known photos, but impressive subject nonetheless .. riding the waves with 500+ km/h

cheers

Erkanoplan, GEV (Ground Effect Vehicle). Basically a cross between a ship, a plane and a hovercraft. These critters skim just above the water surface using a layer of high-pressure air created by the aerodynamic forces between the wings and the water surface. I read a report once about some monstrous units being picked up by American satellites travelling at incredibly high speeds across the Black Sea, they thought that they were rocket-powered hydrofoils the size of a tanker !!!

Revell made a 1/144 version a while back.

Cheers, D

Looks a bit science fiction or maybe one of those strange boats and planes that you drew when you were a little kid. ....Al

iirc it was also known as the "Caspian Sea Monster".

I've seen impressive vidoes of it in action but this shows how massive the thing was.
