I know the P-51 had a laminar flow wing and that the upper surfaces of the wing were puttied, primed and then painted (indeed, even painted with silver paint on aluminum aircraft!).

But what about the under-surfaces of the wing on NMF aircraft? puttied primed and painted silver, or bare aluminum? All the factory pictures I can find only show the upper surfaces of the wings, so i can't tell.

thanks!

Vance, all the P-51's coming out the factory doors where puttied, primed and painted, top and bottom. It insured undisturbed air flow around the wing. In the field, when the camo paint was stripped off, the putty sometimes came with it.

I would assume (and you know what that can get you) , if the putty started coming off the top of the wing, the bottom would stripped too.

So, the answer is...check your refrences!

cool, thanks guys! I'm doing a fairly factory fresh bird that was shipped NMF, so puttied, primed and painted top and bottom it is!
