A few months ago, Masterbox Ltd. made the announcement that they would be producing a range of Pilot and Groundcrew figures in 1/32nd scale. Here''s the first. Details and images of 3201 - "Famous Pilots of WWII" Part 1, can be seen:

Nice start, but I would rather have seen Adolf Galland as Sam has several 109's in his markings. Can't wait to see more in this range.

Hi there

Neat, although I have to admit I'd rather have everyday pilots than recognisable aces. They should be excellent because the sculptor, A. Gagarin, also produces the fine resin figures in Rest Models' range. I can't help but wonder why Masterbox didn't release their recent Luftwaffe Helferinnen set in 1:32 too - maybe they'll scale them up?

All the best

I'm in regular contact with Masterbox and have had at least one conversation over their plans in 1/32nd. The idea behind it was to go for both markets - historical figure painters AND the Aviation modeler. Personally I think they ARE sufficiently generic to be used with any fighter of the countries represented. What will be intresting is when they get their ground crews into production...

I've just had an interesting reply from Masterbox:

I read the replies of modellers for our kit 3201 and ask you to tell them
the following:
- We do not think to stop on this kit and next time we will release
3201 Kit #2. It will contain Gallant, Bader, Kozhedub and, of course,
we would like to join some Italian pilot but we have a very little
information about Italian aces. May be respectable Italian guy will
help us with the information?
- I paid the attention that there is an opinion, that our figures are
not aces but ordinary pilots. I don't strongly agree with it. The
man, who crated the tactic of fighter operating and this tactic has not
been overcome till now,can not be an ordinary pilot. The girl of 20
can not be an ordinary pilot! The girl who killed more planes than
famous Polish pilot Stanislav Skalsky, etc.

If it`s any help (and i know it`s in 1/35th scale) but Tamiya did a two figure set of a German soldier and pilot. To me the pilot looks a lot like Adolf Galland so you could try that if you`re desperate.
As for this set and any others that follow count me in as i definately WILL be buying these when they become available.

Hi again

It's great to see that Masterbox monitor threads like this for the opinions of their customers and take the trouble to respond.

Further aces sets could include US Navy, Finnish and Commonwealth pilots. If Masterbox are stuck for a suitable Italian ace, I'd suggest Adriano Visconti for starters.

All the best

How about some of the pilot figures running as if scambling to their aircraft or climbing up the wings? Good for the dio builders. Espcially marines for carriers or the south Pacific.
