Hi again.

Here's the second of my past builds, an old Fujimi F-4N Phantom II, VF-151 "Vigilantes". Decided to try something different and build it in flight just seconds after dropping the external tanks.

First I’d like to say I love the base, which is one of the best of displays I’ve seen so far. Second the Phantom looks great, clean build…love those colorful tails. I assume it’s 1/72nd.

Great work!!!

Hi Joe

Yes, 1/72nd scale and straight out of the box. It was the Bi-Centennial scheme they used in 1976. This one is always popular when it's on the club stand at a show.

Really cool concept. The F4 is nicely built. May I suggest clear plastic rods for support of the tanks? As it is I think it already is one of the best in flight bases Ive seen.

I used the aluminium rods because that was what I had to hand at that time. The plastic stuff I had was not clear and did not like the lathe.

There is a similar project to this in the pipeline, but using two larger aircraft. I will be using clear acrylic rod on that, but the mounting system will have to use some aluminium rod to allow it to be dismantled for transporting. I just need to sort out the system first before the project starts.

Hi Mick
Really like your display, the folk in the town by the river are in for a nasty surprise! The tanks being jettisoned remind me of the SRB's leaving the Space Shuttle once they have done their work. Nice one.

Thank you for all of your comments. There has always been a great response to this model, it's always on the shelf in my workshop. With the present set up, it's hard to transport it to shows, so I've been thinking about changing the mounting system and test out the planned system of acrylic rod and alloy mountings for the big in-flight project.

If you think this looks good, wait until the next one is done. Here's a taster of what to expect. Two large 1/72nd scale aircraft, in-flight and formation. Expected size, 18 inches wide by 3 and a half feet long by up to 18 inches high.

I just need to finish a couple of other projects first.

The kit was okay, it went together with out any problems. I just had to modify the undercarriage doors in the closed position (not an option in the kit) and chop off the pylons on the external tanks.

I need to modify the mounting of the Phantom to make it easier to transport it to shows.

And I thought it looked good from the side... when you look top down and see that image of the city on the ground it's fantastic.

Really interesting and well executed idea and the painting on the phantom is lovely!
