TwistedFate,

What in the world are the large tanks/strakes/lumps mounted on the top sides of the fuselage in the fourth picture? I've never seen these before; what do they do?

Hi,

These large tanks work as extra- fuel tanks. Polish F-16 will receive them, too.

MichalBT is absolutely correct. They are Conformal Fuel Tanks or CFT's. They look awkward on the F-16. F-15's use them too, but they look a little better on the Eagle.

They do look awkward. Are they jettisonable or are you stuck with them once in a dogfight?

Your stuck with them. CFT's are only removeable by ground crews. Being located where they are it would be far to easy to render the plane unflyable if one were to hit after ejection. The only bright side is that by the time you get into a furball the tanks should be empty or nearly empty.

NOTE: There are no plans to use CFT's on US F-16's. They are for exported Block 50 and higher F-16's only.

The CFT's are also going to be on the UAE's 80 block 60 F-16.they don't inpair performance too much.CFT's seem to be the fashion now.i believe the gripen and rafale are being tested with them.
