Looking to build a Hellcat. I never do aircraft, but always wanted to do a Hellcat.

What kit would be best in 1/48? To be honest, I don't care too much about what version it is. I just want a Hellcat that I can do in that awesome dark blue.

Best buy - the Otaki/Arii/Airfix 1/48 Hellcat. Before the Hasegawa 1/48 Hellcats were released, this kit had a pretty good rep for accurate outline and for being a generally fun build. Even today, it stacks up pretty well against the Hasegawa F6F for external accuracy. The cockpit is so-so compared to the Hasegawa kit, but the rest of it (except maybe for decals) is pretty solid.

But you are saying the Hasegawa kits are the best today?

For me the best Hellcat is the Hasegawa 1/48.

Well, the Hasegawa kits may be th ebest in some ways, but there are some shape issues in the Hase kits' cowlings that aren't a problem with the old Otaki/Arii/Airfix 1/48 kit. If you want a state-of-the-art, up to the minute Hellcat kit -- with the associated expense -- yeah, I'd go with the Hasegawa Hellcat.

But that Otaki kit still has a good reputation, and it's going to be a lot cheaper.

:-) Steve,
Mike is correct, If you aren't to bothered about cockpit detail and don't normally build aircraft then I would go with the Otaki/Arii/Airfix Hellcat, much cheaper :-)
Here is my Hasegawa Hellcat F6F-5 :-)

Hi all

It's nice to be reminded... newest isn't always "best"... :-)

Glad I've got an Arii kit tucked away somewhere...

Cheers

I should have said minor shape issues earlier, since the Hasegawa kit looks just like a
Hellcat to anyone except the most obsessive, hypercritical eye.

I ain't hypercritical, and my attention span shortens with age #:-) #:-)

But I like building cheap if i can get a good result that way too

Mal,

I could only hope to build one as nice as yours! Gives me inspiration.
