Hi all:

As I related in other posts Iīm building a P 51D kit in 1/48 from ARII. This is a reisue of the Otaki kit. Itīs cheap and it doesnīt have the detail level and general fit of the Tamiya and Hasegawa kits but it has beautifull engraved panel lines and surface detail.
I replaced the pilotīs seat with a resin one that I found in my spare box and also repaced the wheels (the ones of the are really bad) with a pair of a Monogram P 51B kit.
Now Iīm decaling and still rest the canopie and minor details.
Opinions will be welcome, here are some pics:

Very nice. I'm working on a 51D myself. Love the metal finish.

Hi csch

Lovely job!!

It's nice to some of the older kits giving Tamigawa a run for their money!!! :-)

All the best

csch - looks like that metalizer worked out well for you. Which did you use ? Really nice job. How do you plan to do the canopy frame ?

:-) I am building the same kit to try using kitchen foil on :-) A couple of bad fitting parts like the extreme nose piece and the intake lip, but overall not a bad kit. Let down a by the interior.
You have made an excellant job of it :-)

Thanks CRS.
I used Model Master Metalizers. Overall I sprayed Aluminium Plate Buffing, in some panels Aluminium Non Buffing and Burnt Metal Buffing in the panels where are placed the exhausts . Then I sprayed an overall coat of MM Metalizer sealer.
I couldnīt obtain so much brightness as I desiered but Iīm happy with the Model Master Metalaizer paints, they work fine and are very easy to use.
For the canopie Iīm planning to use Tamiya masking tape, the traditional method.

I was quite confident about using kitchen foil, after the trials I have conducted, but Bryans post, ref his Lightning, on the RRB, has made me a little wary. Probably a good thing cos I'll be a tad more cautious now. I'm intrigued to see if I can get different shaded panels, while applying largish pieces of foil. Nearly ready to go, wish me luck :-)

Hi Mal:
Wish you all the luck !!! Maybe to achive diferent metal tones in some panels you can try airbrushing MM Metalizer of diferent shades over the foil. I donīt know if this is mad but if it doesnīt work I think it will be not very dificult to clean it over the metal foil.
Luck :-) Luck :-) Luck :-)

Iīm changing my mind about the ARII kits. This P 51D really surprise me. I was expectig a lot of job trying to get a good fit but it wasnīt necesary. This kit is a good value !
If I find the FW 190 from ARII Iīll buy it.

Lot of people under estimate Arii (Otaki) kits. Remember these kits are mid 70 technology which was very good for the time. I built a few of these myself back then. Price wise also affordable compared to the Fujimi and Tamiya kits at the time. Hasegawa didn't make 1/48th as yet. Yes the cockpits lack detail, but now we have photoetch and aftermarket seats to improve them, if you want but not necessary. Look at that Mustang, it builds to a very nice kit. The Hellcat and the Fw-190 in this series are very good not excellent but good. And they are fun to build also. :-)

I have other plans for replicating different panel shades, I am trying not to use Metalizers, particularly Allclad II, because it is expensive. If the foiling exercise works, then no more Allclad :-)

This is one of my earliest 1/48 kits, the Airfix re-boxing of the Arii/Otaki Fw 190A-8 with airwaves PE set. Again good surface detail but poor cockpit, the PE helped alot :-)

Very nice job Mal ! Impresive ground work. Thanks for posting it.
Please when you finish the P 51 tell us what you did with the panels (shades).
