or weathered..very gungy.so no point in starting out with gloss bare metal only to dull it down with weathering,right? other modern color photos have a grayish/white tone to the bare metal, so I am thinking about Alclad white aluminum? whada ya think?

Hi Dave !
This link shows how to mix the Alcad 'shades' up a little to get an interesting overall finish.
One shade will make the P-47D look a little "toy like" I think.
Alcad
Polished Aluminium looks the goods for a main 'base coat' IMO.
Cheers

not at all, I have been turning around this "hot potatoe" for severla months now and can't decide whether or not I am going to use alclad;
the need fro priming, the warnings that it is not at all scratch resistant... it all makes me wonder a bit.

"Hybrid Painting Method" for natural metal
This method is hybrid of airbrush and brush painting. First, Mr.color's Super Metallic Chrome Silver was sprayed (slightly mixed #2 black). Second, Mr.color's Chrome Silver (straight from the bottle) was drybrushed on the sprayed surface. Drybrushed silver can express hairlines on the natural matal surface. Detailed painting method is as follows.
#1000 surfacer -> #8 Silver (for the base) -> Chrome Silver + #2 Black (spraying) -> Chrome Silver (drybrushing) -> #46 Clear (spraying) -> Markings(Yellow, Olive Drab, Insignia, etc) -> #2000 sand paper polishing (only for marking portions) -> decals -> #46 Clear & #30+46 Flat Clear (only for Olive Drab portion) -> weathering

ROXSTER, awesome job on the P-47, what do you mean by 'markings portion? would that be decals? and why just polishing there only? I have a lot to learn about bare metal finishes.thnaks to everyone for the advice, I have two academy P-47s on the way.I will try both alclad and mr color.why are the panels different shades?

Dave, this is not the model built me. It's built by Jun Temma from Japan. His P-51C is featured on Hyperscale. Here's the article:

I always use Mr. Color paints. Markings for example D-Day stripes, checker and national insignia were all painted before Silver.
Then, I sprayed an undercoat of Silver which was #8 Silver 50% + #46 Clear 50%. Next, Finishing Silver which was Alclad Polished Aluminum 50% + #46 Clear 50% (Mr. Color Thinner was available). The panels around exhausts were painted Mr. Super Stainless.
Mr. Super Stainless was drybrushed lightly on Finishing Silver. This painting technique using airbrushing together with drybrushing is very effective for duplicating a weathered Natural Metal Finish.
After applying decals, Flat Clear (#46 Clear 50% + #30 Flat Base 50%) was sprayed over the model as a sealing coat.
